A mechanic friend commented to me that when he first had to work on a Subaru boxer he wondered why it seemed so familiar when he had never worked on one before. He had worked on Flavias though. When some years later a Subaru enthusiast confided that his engine was a spiritual derivative of the great Alfa boxer engines I though I should check up. I found that the Alfa engine has both sided of the crank case cast in a single block with a removable panel in the top through which to insert the crank. We know the truth.

The Gamma engine also compares well with later Subaru offerings.

I know this will bring others out in hives but.... I have always wondered what a Flavia fitted with a modern, efficient, powerful, fuel injected Subaru engine would be like.

I know it would no longer be a Flavia, but imagine the power, reliability and refinement.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried this ?

Bob

Bobhenry you are not alone on the dark side. What if somebody turned up at Thonley Kelham with a Flavia, that engine and a pocket full of cash.......The Outlaw Flavia.

Bobhenry is spot on! I had an Impreza Turbo as my everyday car for several years and it was a fabulous drive - as well as doing great things for my street cred with the under 30s. I too had thought about putting the Impreza engine in a Flavia and reckoned even the un-turbo'd version would be fine. Presumably the gearbox would have to go too. I am sorely tempted....
