Title: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 07 October, 2018, 07:57:07 PM
Thanks to Frank and Brian I am now the proud owner of a potentially cracking Y10 GTie.
I'm sure some club members will know the car, it belonged to a long time club members couple.

Really doesn't look that bad, not long since it was on the road so shouldn't take too much sorting.
Failed the test on welding to the inner cill/seat belt mount area last June. Sure there'll be other little bits to tidy up but it's in pretty decent shape.
Has what looks like a factory fitted tilt/slide sunroof.

Lovely alcantara interior as usual, well specced these little cars.

Looking forward to getting behind the wheel, when I can find some spare time to attend to it that is!

Loads of history, all MoT's etc to back up the very low 47k miles!

Yes, got the potential to be a little belter David.

Wet look suits it better at the moment though  ;D

You are very welcome. It is indeed a potentially beautiful car and you are the man to realise that potential. I think the carpet lets it down and interestingly the lesser models have a felted carpet with no pile which seems to wear better. As to the sunroof I believe the sliding sunshade inside the headlining marks it as a factory sunroof.

I found myself doing the usual last night, trawling ebay for Y10 parts  ;D

Couple of brochures ordered already, looking forward to getting the car back home, or up to the unit to be accurate, so I can have a proper look at things.
Plan at the moment is to give it a checkover once home to see what parts etc I need to get hold of then find time over the winter to attend to the mot specific jobs, sort out the welding to the inner sills and a few bits I spotted at the cill ends etc so I can get a test on it in the spring.
I'll use it for a summer or two then once I've caught up a bit I will probably pull it apart to do a full resto.
It was painted in 2012 according to the info with the car but a couple of areas have come back through, n/s/r outer arch for one plus a couple of patches around the sunroof opening. Really needs to be cut up and welded to make a longer lasting job of it.
With the miles and condition of the rest of the car it's well worth the effort.
Not that it'll be for profit, this one (like my integrale) will be a keeper for my private collection and not for sale  ;)

Brilliant little cars. I bought a Fila model for the kids in the late 90s. All I got was groans until they saw the Fila interior, then I was a hero! My son drove it into an early grave, but he and his mates said how much they enjoyed it. Then I found a white GTie, fabulous car. Used it for my daily drive for a couple of years and then gave it to my daughter at Uni at the time, around the year 2000. Also driven into an early grave, but what a great little car. Have fun!!

Looks nice. Had a black Y10 with red Fila interior. Quite a while ago, as the late Princess Diana was alongside us at Kensington traffic lights on the test drive.

Had this picture around dinnertime from Brian, little Y10 trying valiantly to fill my mates trailer!

Thanks again to Brian for assisting in the purchase and for the nice surprise of a folder full of the workshop data plus a cd all about the Y10, hopefully I won't need to study the data for a while though!

Thanks too to my mate for collecting it, he's a great guy who is willing to safely and easily collect anything from anywhere. His work includes stuff like the BLS Alfa 33 race car on race weekends so he's used to even low slung race cars, feel free to ask me for his number should you want a reliable and safe collection.

This afternoon the car arrived safe and well.

All tucked away safely now for a few weeks until I get a chance to have a look over it properly.

Did have a sneaky blast up the back lane, just to say I'd actually driven it of course!

Couldn't resist popping up to the unit this morning to have a look over the car, glad it's inside and it got moved yesterday not today, the rain is making up for the dry weather now!

It is in remarkably good condition underneath I'm happy to report, better than I'd dared hope for.

The bit of welding that the MoT man had pointed out a year or so ago won't take much sorting. Looks like it has very recently had new brakes all round as found no issues anywhere, steering/ball joints etc look good. One small split in a bottom ball joint boot but that may be OK, or I'll fit a new boot or joint.

Inner rear wheel arches which I thought looked like needed work aren't that bad, a clean up and some treatment and they should last a few more years.

 ;D

I hear you David.

I used to have to do cars on my gravel driveway with a car port for cover, or a wind tunnel as it often was!

I started renting a small unit (about the size of a double garage) up at a local place which is perfect for doing one car at a time, more than ample for the hobbyist I am.
A bigger unit (where the Y10 is now) became available last year which I share with a friend (the Peugeot owner) where we can store or work on cars in the dry and relative warm. Nice bright electrics inc 3 phase should we require it, even an inside loo washroom! Rent isn't too bad either, only downside is it being a 30 to 40 minute drive away from home depending on traffic.

We also had the fortune for it to have an inspection pit previously installed by the HGV repair people who rented it, a proper steel sided one with lights and steps. Not quite as deep as a normal car one though as they did trailer repairs, they'd not be able to reach otherwise! But is very handy. I had to make some removable covers for it though as was left open!

Comes in handy though, more so in a lot of ways than a ramp which would be permanently taking up space.

Y10 only just wide enough for it though! My lads' Hillman Imp has to be used very carefully over it!

Yes Richard, strong covers for the pit, had to make them myself tough as there was just an open pit when I got there!

Started to collect a few bits and bobs for the car, new rear hatch struts amongst them so as an easy fit I thought I'd get the ball rolling  ;D

Still busy with the integrale but hoping to be able to do a few jobs to the Y10 soon, ready for a fresh MoT next Spring.

Managed to find the source of the oil leak on the Y10, had hoped a simple job like the cam cover gasket as the oil was running down from the top...seems my hope it was just this gasket and not more serious was justified

Corner of the gasket was way off following the cover!

Hope it won't be too much longer before I get to patch the floor and get an MoT on it

Hi Frank.
I'd be interested in taking any spares that would be suitable for the car, no problem in storing them and you never know when you might need something.

 :D

Managed to get a few more jobs done on the car now.
The oil leak was fixed last time so now the engine has been pressure washed it stops it smelling of burning oil within a minute of starting.
Changed the cambelt for peace of mind.
Welded up a small hole in the floor to sill underneath.
New side repeaters fitted so it's about ready for an MoT now, I'll take it in a few weeks so then I can at least get some use out of it this year.

The passenger side gained a couple of scrapes on the door and rear 1/4 panel from the confines of it's parking place, or maybe the trailer ride home, either way they stuck out like a sore thumb.

About 10 years ago I had a Prisma in what I recall was the same colour, knew I had an aerosol for a small repair to that so I dug it out and it still had paint and worked...and was the same colour code!

Sanded the scrapes, primed them, basecoat and lacquer all from aerosols so won't be a long term solution but has tidied it enough for now.

Looking forward to taking it for a run now.

Yes, that's the size mate 8)
Handily the car came with a near new set of Pirelli tyres, not such a popular size anymore, everything is at least 2" bigger diameter!

I'd pressure washed under the bonnet last time out to clean the remains of the oil leak which had made a right mess.
Stupidly though I'd got some water in the alternator which despite the tried and tested method of leaving it to see if it cured itself the charge warning light remained sure that all wasn't well.

Putting the volt meter on to see if it was charging or just a gremlin in the wiring made me switch it off quick though, charging at over 18volts  8) that's dangerous territory for having a battery explode..

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 06 August, 2019, 09:37:10 PM
As the alternator is fairly easy to get off I thought I'd have a go at changing the voltage regulator, never actually taken one apart before, looked the simplest of tasks..

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 06 August, 2019, 09:41:31 PM
Once the plastic rear cover was off it simply needed the two retaining screws taking out and the new voltage regulator fitting on, less than £15 and all working well again, charge rate perfect at around 14.3v. Result!

Car now sits awaiting a trip to the mot station, maybe next week or so..

Even though my integrale is now on the road I'm really looking forward to trying the Y10, it's been 20 years or more since I've driven one.

Great fun fixing old cars for the price of a burger and a couple of pints...I must get on with my projects but the old war wound (aka a hernia) is playing up again and Matron says I should go back to the doctor and get it sorted (3rd time lucky) We are off to Cornwall for a week on Friday so I am resisting getting under any old cars till after I get back.

It is a nice dilemma to have Brian, planning on it being the integrale after the magazine thread, Y10 not a bad back up car though.

Be nice to give the Y10 a run out back down to help Richard dig that Berlina out if it's still planned... Show that the car is still alive and well  8)

Well the mot went kind of OK. Failed on a couple of bits, CO level too high and the nsr foot and handbrake pretty much doing nothing.
Advisory on split rubber boot on the osf bottom ball joint.
Not a disaster by any means.
Had a cambelt to do on my mates Alfa Giulietta yesterday afternoon so left the Y10 repairs until this morning..

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 15 August, 2019, 08:35:28 PM
CO level would be just a case of adjusting the mixture screw at the air flow meter once back at the test station.
The rear brakes had a siezed wheel cylinder and a faulty lever for the handbrake, partly siezed but also worn. Nothing the welder and copper grease couldn't sort. The wheel cylinder got stripped, cleaned and greased as I couldn't get a new one quickly.

Back to the garage this afternoon for a retest, emissions sorted with the twiddle of a screwdriver.
Then into the brake rollers and damn and blast the peddle goes to the floor!
Back on the lift it appeared the brake compensator had burst.

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 15 August, 2019, 08:38:32 PM
Back at my unit the compensator came off without too much drama, thankfully no broken bolts. The cause of the failure though was a brake pipe completely out of sight that had been chafing, really lucky that it burst when it did and not whilst going down the road!

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 15 August, 2019, 08:41:14 PM
As I will now wait until next week or later to retest the car I've ordered some parts up, new wheel cylinder, new compensator whilst it's off, also I've taken the front hub off to press the ball joint out seeing as I already bought a joint, which I'd forgot about!

Yes, extremely lucky that it burst on the brake rollers, could have been a disaster had it happened on the road.

Got a few new bits arrived today for the repairs, the inspiration from seeing the cars at the AGM has spurred me on.
Even decided the little brackets for the new front anti roll bar bushes out to be cleaned of rust and painted, hope it doesn't get obsessive!

yes, they can.
In fact it's easier to do them with the car on its wheels as it all aligns up better, the bushes have a split in them so can be folded over the roll bar. Be sure to use plenty of red rubber grease to ensure they last..

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 28 August, 2019, 08:57:16 PM
Thankfully the little Y10 now has an mot, new horns fitted so it has a nice high / low tone than just makes the right sound.
When I gave it a wash though the water was running on the inside of the hatch glass...
The sealant at the top edge was somewhat lacking, the glass could be flexed away from the hatch!

Title: Re: Y10 new owner
Post by: Kevinlincs on 28 August, 2019, 09:02:21 PM
Pulled out the outer seal and filled with bonder, it'll be OK until the refurb is done, it'll stop water getting in but also stop the glass falling out down the road!

With that done I gave it a polish, chuffed with how it came up, not perfect but perfectly presentable.

I felt the carpet rather let the rest of the car down. Lancia's tufted carpet of this era was cheap and nasty in my opinion and the light grey shows marks dreadfully. I much prefer the black more felted carpet in the lesser versions. It sets off the lighter coloured seats nicely and doesn't show marks.

I've not done anything more than a damp cloth on the alcantara bits, carpets got scrubbed with some simoniz foaming carpet cleaner that I got given.
The black plastics got a scrub or two with good old Mr sheen!
For the windows I don't waste money on fancy expensive glass cleaner. Often just use neat screenwash on a cloth but I recently treat myself to a large spray bottle of window cleaner from The Range shop, best £1 I've spent in a while

Finally got around to giving the car a ride out, brought it home from the rented unit last night, about 25 miles without much issue.
Took it to work this morning to do the oil change and spray the underside with the rust inhibitor waxy substance. Hopefully that'll slow things down so I can use it for a year or two without having to do repairs.
Now it's had a bit of a longer journey though the drivers front brake has started to bind on a bit. I've ordered a pair of caliper rebuild kits complete with new pistons so I'll tackle that this week.

Mrs came for the ride last night bringing it home, she wasn't at all impressed, why do some women not get cars?
By the time we'd got home she'd managed to get me thinking about why I need to have 4 cars on the road... like she can manage with one pair of shoes  ::)
Went and filled up the tank on my own though and all was well again, I'll just have to rotate which cars come home  ;D

Took it for a ride up to Cadwell Park this afternoon to see some friends who were racing with the classic touring car racers.

No big drama if she doesn't end up liking the car Frank, if I like it enough I'll keep it, which I do so I will  ;D

The caliper seal kits arrived this week so I stripped the drivers one down and got it all cleaned out of the rust and crud, used the new seal with the new piston despite the original piston being in good order, you never know until you take it apart if the chrome plating has come off and it was only about £5 more for the pistons so worth having.

I'll take it for a ride out this Sunday, might even take it for a ride to skeggy as Rob is there at a classic car show with his Imp.

The Y10 has now gone , temporarily I suspect, to a new owner. My friend Richard now has custody of the car in a deal for a Flavia coupe that we somehow managed to co-own. So I have a '63 car to restore and he has a lovely little car to run around in.
I needed to thin at least one car from the list of 4 that I have on the road, Richard expressed an interest in it (why wouldn't he?) so the deal was simple really. Made more logical for me in that if/when Richard wants to sell the car on I get first refusal, something we've done before so no doubt it'll eventually come back to me, in the meantime it'll get a little use rather than locked away in a garage, little beauty deserves to see some use again. 8)

Sounds like a perfect compromise...I need someone to take my Appia and the Y10 do lots of work on them and give them back. I saw the Y10 on Saturday a couple of full days on it would have it down the MOT station. As we are moving back up North I will be hopefully only 20 minutes or so away from it so fingers crossed.

If you wanted to share it for parts I could use the interior. The rust holes look like quite a lot of work.

It's said to be reasonable underneath so fingers crossed, quite excited at the prospect of getting another Y10, shouldn't really have sold the GTie….

If it turns out to be a basket case Frank I'll be in touch re the interior  8)

I guess after the Delta you can deal with any amount of rust but I would want to have a good dig under the boot carpet to see if the edges of the boot floor, inner wings, outer wings have gone through along with the rust showing on the outer rear wing. Also with sills that rusty I wouldn't be surprised if the edges of the floor pan need replacing. Has it gone through under the windscreen or is that just surface rust?

My workshop manuals have all the body construction details including cross sections of all the seams if you find yourself involved in major reconstruction.

It's great to know it has gone to such a good home but I wonder why you weren't tempted to spend another £3,400 and got one that didn't need the body tidying up? Just give me a shout if you need any of the body structure information from the workshop manual.

Still a few Lancia projects to do so the welder won't be getting lonely anytime soon!
If that article is still in the pipeline Tim then yes, could be interesting..
I always do things the hard way Frank, plus I get to know what's underneath..I'm suspicious of cars that "have never been welded"..

Just tonight I collected a few missing parts from the 2000 Sedan I bought a few years ago and haven't done yet despite trying to find the enthusiasm, on looking back I've had it 4 years....must get on with it...

Haven't used the GT at all since getting it back last September. just parked it up and put a cover over it, mainly to stop bird poop and cat prints off it but also as I had no intention of using it over the winter.
Took the cover off it today as it was a dry but cold day, thought I'd start it up to warm things through and move it up and down the drive to get the tyres onto a different spot and clean the brakes if nothing else.
A completely flat battery changed that idea, and my charger is up at the unit, guess I should have been more pro-active and disconnected it last year...or started it up once a month.
As it will eventually get the full strip-down treatment as per the FIRE car, sills already purchased, the I'm now thinking I ought to use it a bit more without worrying over the road conditions, not like it's going to change much of what will need doing! What also concerned me with it being under a car cover but not under any other shelter was the amount of condensation on the underside of the sunroof, if the rest of the roof has similar levels of water above the headlining then it can only spell trouble. I think I'd rather use the car and keep things circulating rather than cover it over for 6 months of the year.
As it's very much roadworthy then it seems daft not to use it so I'll give it until March 1st then start using it whatever comes, Flavia coupe is next in line to get restored so it'll be a few years before the GT gets its' turn but no reason why I can't put a few thousand miles on it by then.

If you are going to do a complete rebuild on it eventually just get out there and use it. They're a smashing little car for commuting to work in.
