Title: Sticky oil pressure relief valve
Post by: BlueKSO on 01 March, 2019, 09:56:01 PM
re;  63 Series 1 Flavia Coupe

Has anyone had any experience freeing off a sticky oil pressure relief valve.  Situated, as far I can make out from various diagrams, in the top of the oil filter canister, the part you take off when changing the filter.

All advice gratefully appreciated .

Cheers,  Peter

Is it stuck open or shut? Is there a timing chain oil spout similar to a Fulvia, which can break off, causing low oil pressure?

No, the needle on the gauge, 90% of the time acts normally.  But every now and then goes way past max which it maintains for a short while and then suddenly jumps back to normal max.  Every indication that the relief valve is sticking open.  I’m just worried about my poor old oil cooler pipes and radiator!

Cheers, Peter

if. It does this when engine is hot then I doubt it is the relief valve as the oil pressure is then determined by cumulative tolerances in Lancia engines. If in doubt put another mechanical pressure gauge in series with the oil pressure pipe.

Perhaps the sender is faulty?

Tim,  it can do it from cold.  Purely from past experience, not with Lancia mind you, I’ve found this kind of indicative behaviour points to the relief valve.  So if as I believe the valve is in the filter head, I just want to make sure I’m not going to upset any adjustments in my attempt to rectify it.

Richard,  as far as I’m aware the system is purely mechanical, no electrical sender unit is involved.
