anyone any suggestions for decent replacement windscreen wipers for an Aprilia. My existing ones are feeble (in fact that grossly exaggerates their capacity)

I really should replace the whole arms not just the blades, as the are pretty shot.

Try Storm wipers on ebay, polished blade holder similar to a lot of originals
rather than the modern black ones

although after the last 2 weeks weather in Belgium, it's a periscope I need rather than improved wipers.

Use RainX with it you dont need wipers on a flat screen!

I think that as Aprilias don't have opening windscreens, they need wipers (and washers) to pass an MOT in the U.K. It might not be the same in Belgium. Andrew Maclagan and I have Daf van wipers on our Augustas (and on my Lambda) which work very well. Trouble is, they don't make 'em any more!

I think the RainX option and increasing speed to clear the rain when required appeals the most.
The blades do actually clear the screen but the mounting hole in the "slave" wiper arm (the one that rotates around the spindle) has worn oval at the mounting point .
In any case I sailed through the full technical control here last tuesday which is a landmark moment passed after lengthy preparations .They can be extraordinarily difficult here and most people don't even attempt to get an older car through the full test.(they have been known to "time" the windsceen wipers and fail cars)
In fact, suspension and brakes were well above (or below?) the required standard.Emissions were also fine although I have to adjust the  carbs again a little as it doesn't run so well at the 1-2% co2 that we set it for the test. 

My Lambda torpedo has no wipers and rainX has always worked.

The Belna has wpers put they are less effective than rainX.

I have found rain-x very good for clearing virgin rain but not from spray generated by other vehicles.

I first started to use rainX on my trip to Portugal in 2004 on "Fay", for best results I used to redo it every day which then worked well if you had sufficient flow of water over the screen at anything above 40mph, but it was also much better with spray as the odd quick flick was sufficient to clear the spray & muck.
I always do the remainder of the windows every now and again, as well as the headlamps which also keep clear.

of course, most classic cars are no longer used on rainy days

an aprilia is too hot inside to use on any other sort of weather......
In the sun (and my car is black) it's an oven. Goodness knows how you would drive one regularly in italian heat....

The Appia has a splendid form of subsidary personal cooling, two vents hidden away below the steering column which when open allow copious amounts of air (depending on speed) to flow up the trouser leg. In winter one forgets and wonders of course where the cold blast is coming from! 

I went searching for RainX and came across a review which reckons that Halford's own brand is as good if not better and costs less so I bought some of that.  Not been out in the rain since...
