Morning all,

further on my sliding pillar restoration - i plan to replace the missing main spring by getting a pair of new springs made for my front sliding pillars. My theory is that it is better to get a pair made.  I plan to ask the spring company to make two copies of the existing spring that i have, as i believe it would be better to have a pair the same.  But before i do that...does anyone have any information on the specification for the spring - as i am assuming that after 70+ years there will be some wear and deformation on the existing spring that i have??

Before manufacturing a pair, have you checked with Cavalitto in Turin if they are available?
I assume you want them for an Aprilia or an Ardea. Cavalitto manufactures frequently requested parts for those models.

And if you still want to have them manufactured, once the machine is set up, it costs almost nothing to have a few more pairs wound!

 

D Faulkner near Chichester are a brilliant company ro deal with. I had a pair of custom sp springs made for my B12. No complaints.

thank you Simon for the specs! i have checked cavillito's site and they do not list springs, so have contacted C Faulkner's...will keep you posted on prices..

ah, good point, am checking with Enrico... meanwhile C Faulkners have a spring that very nearly matches available off the shelf.

existing spring measures as follows:

length 277mm, OD = 65mm, ID = 47mm

Faulkners spring measures (including the powder coating)

length = 279mm, OD = 66.6mm, ID = 48.2mm

with the same deflection per kg

so will see what Enrico has, but may go for the Faulkners spring as it is very close, particularly if i remove the powder coating...

Thanks Kari, good tip. I mailed last night, had a reply by 7.30 this morning and have ordered some bits.
I had made three enquiries in the past from their 'automated' website without response.

Sometimes the response varies due to how busy he is: in the lead up to the Mille Miglia, he may well have been super busy.

a quick update, i had an initial reply from Enrico stating he probably had the springs, but asking for measurements...i immediately responded with measurements, but he never replied to that response (despite sending via the email address and using the webform)...so after a week of waiting i have gone for the Faulkner springs and ordered them this morning....will update on progress when the arrive.

the springs arrived from Faulkners this morning, well packed and a quick service.  I have checked all the dimensions and they fit very well...my only slight worry is the top and bottom of the springs are not finished flat all round the circumference as with the originals (see pics) this leaves a small gap under the thrust bearing - i dont think that is an issue as the thrust bearing surfaces are very stiff...any thoughts??

I would have thought that the pressure from the spring (weight of the car) being unevenly spread on the thrust bearing would accelerate wear.

Is there room for a slightly thicker washer between spring and bearing, as that could be an option. Also you have to consider the amount of driving and miles you will do in the car, I guess it’s a lot less than originally designed for.  

yes i think an additional washer is a good idea. i will fit the springs and see how it drives and if its still bad I may have to pull it apart again and modify the spring...
