Title: 1600 Engine Oil
Post by: Paul Greenway on 05 November, 2022, 10:24:34 PM
This topic has probably been covered umpteen times so apologies.

I have always- for the seven years that I have owned my car- used Mobil 1 10w-60 synthetic oil in my 1600 Sport and it's always been ok. I will shortly be servicing it again and was wondering what oil is considered best.

Any advice welcome, thanks.

As you say this topic has been discussed a lot. When these engines were designed fancy oils did not really exist for road cars so that was why the manufacturers recommended oil changes at 6,000 or even 3,000 miles. These engines ran fine on mineral 20-50 or 10-40. I think as long as the oil and filter are changed every year the type of oil is somewhat irrelevant as long as it is of reasonably good quality. As well as the Fulvia I have a 1970's Alfa Spider. 6 or 7 years ago I asked a very reputable Alfa specialist about what oil to use, and they said they always used QQ 10-40 semi synthetic. It is pretty cheap from Euro Car Parts and I have been really happy with it, although only doing 2,000 miles a year I do not really know what data I need to compare it with. I am sure others may have a different view on the subject, but I certainly do not get worked up about whether one oil is "better" than another. Clean oil is the best.

I agree, any quality 10-40 should be fine.
