Title: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: HBG on 12 October, 2023, 05:55:57 AM Is there one?
I want to check the torque of my head bolts which I can see the torque and order in the manual. After that I want to check the valve clearances. It's getting the engine at the right position to know that the gap is ready to be checked that I'm unsure about. Thanks Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Clarkey Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: lancialulu on 12 October, 2023, 10:46:21 AM With Fulvia adjust the tappet whn the heel of the rocker is opposite the lobe (ie max gap). It is relatively easy to see each cam lobe.

Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Wangler on 12 October, 2023, 08:31:04 PM Clockwise according to my manual. Also remove the spark plugs.
Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: waterman42 on 13 October, 2023, 10:35:04 AM Rule of 9 or for a V4 the rule of 5. I'm intrigued about the 5. My thinking was that the number rule isn't so much a function of the configuration of the cylinders but the firing order (on mine is 1,3,4,2). But if I'm wrong I'd like to know why. And perhaps not all V4s have the same camshaft and valve arrangement as the Fulvia so... Got to sit down with paper and pencil and set of 4 stroke cycle first principles! Post by: lancianut666 on 13 October, 2023, 08:02:26 PM I use the rules in the way that if number one valve is fully open number four will be fully shut. This will depend on the valve timing and a sight of a camshaft is always essential before following this rule. With a straight 4 it works easier as you can number the valves 1-8 from cylinder number 1. I have not owned a Fulvia for over 30 years and never set the valve clearances when I had the car but I guess the camshafts are more easily observed with the covers of than an Appia V4.
Clarkey Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Richard Fridd on 14 October, 2023, 05:08:45 AM Regardless of anything else, isn't the method simply to set the valve clearance at the point of being fully closed?

It seems to be getting unnecessarily complicated! Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: lancianut666 on 14 October, 2023, 06:34:50 AM See lancialulu's post above

Post by: fay66 on 14 October, 2023, 09:10:50 AM See lancialulu's post above By slowing the engine tick over really low on some OHV's, I used to set the valve clearances with the engine running, is it possible on a fulvia engine? Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Spider2 on 27 October, 2023, 12:10:07 PM I did my valve clearances yesterday and it is a very simple task with the Omicron adjusting tool. Annoyingly the crank pully nut it obscured by the radiator but you can just get a large spanner on it allowing about 1/10 of a turn a time. Take the plugs out t0 make turning easier. I took the distributer cap off and positioned the rotor arm to #1 so it was at TDC and started with that one. One is spoilt for choice. One can either use the feeler gauge in the gap below the tappet or between the tappet and the little push rod or even the gap at the cam heel. Just make sure the cam lobe is the opposite side.
The omicron tool is only a few quid and brilliantly simple, although for the easiest solution is to have 3 hands, for me a bottle of my wife's favorite sauvignon blanc was a good investment. All my clearances were .05mm tight, I should check them more often. Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. A lancia tool (or Omicron) can I believe take out this wear. Note the silver steel push rods do similarly were at the tappet end. Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Spider2 on 27 October, 2023, 05:23:53 PM Thanks for that. It probably explains why I have one noisy tappet, even when they were tight. Hopefully its a tappet which is easy to change.

Normally it is the valve stem that de-forms and or the end of the little pushrod. tappets are tough little b'sTitle: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Spider2 on 28 October, 2023, 10:32:29 AM I'll change the little push rods. Fingers crossed not the valve stem
Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: lancialulu on 28 October, 2023, 11:52:41 AM I'll change the little push rods. Fingers crossed not the valve stem you can "polish" out the dents on the pushods with a fine shapening stone... If the valves are dented they will be difficult to get out of the head without dremelling the mushroomed area of the end of the valve stem.Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: nistri on 28 October, 2023, 01:00:16 PM If the cupping of the valve stem top is not too bad, it is possible to file it down very gently with a metal file after having applied some grease to catch any filing. Vlve clearance should be measured with the engine cold (i.e. at least 3 h after switching off).
Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: Spider2 on 28 October, 2023, 02:18:09 PM Thanks, all good tips. I have a spare engine that I am overhauling so I will swap the push rods one by one. I will get that little rattle.

Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: LCR1967 on 02 November, 2023, 02:59:21 PM Does anyone know where to purchase the Lancia special tool for adjusting the clearance or a replica?
Title: Re: Idiots guide to setting valve clearances. Post by: nistri on 02 November, 2023, 07:32:47 PM The disc type with a central slot used to be sold by Omicron. Nonetheless, it is not difficult to cut a suitable-size opening in a metal strip as a homemade tool. Feeler gauges and a 10 mm ring spanner are all you will need.Other tools are useful only for some valves and not for exhaust ones as there is no room to use them (they were originally for Fiat 500). In the old days Harry used to say that even a pair of small pliers was enough to turn the tappet screws. Very important that for any adjustment, each tappet pad is precisely at the opposite position to the cam heel.
