Hi folks.

My fuel guage doesn't work well in the lower half of the tank and the dash warning light has stopped working altogether.

I'm going to check the wiring and then remove the fuel sender. A few questions if I may.

What is the likelihood of being able to reuse the rubber seal when I put the sender back? Do I need a sealing compound?

Is there much of the sender I can clean/ refurb once it's out?

From pictures of the available replacements it looks as if the wiring and mechanism sits within the fuel, is this correct?

I'll reduce the fuel level as low as I dare before starting the work, is it possible to fully drain/ clean the tank insitu. I have a very large syringe designed for oil extraction and a battery wet vac............which seems like a very bad idea......electric/ fumes.......

Shouldn’t be any need to use a sealer but obviously a new gasket should be fitted.

The sender unit is extremely simple but not a good design IMO. The lack of damping is not a good feature. Tanc Barratt does a replacement of a different design so if you need a new sender I would look at one of these:

Best way to empty the tank is to buy a cheap fuel pump on eBay and suck out the fuel from the fuel line in the engine compartment. Safer and easier than doing anything close to the tank. Search for:

So long as the tank is about 1/4 full you dont need to drain it. Be v careful with the m5 studs. Use a new gasket and sealant. The original sender units last c 50 years. A replacement will do the same. I like the Tanc Barrett design but I like the original better…..

What sealer would you use, so close to petrol?

I might get a new one in reserve as I'd like to do the job in one go and not have the car off the road waiting for parts.

If you get a new seal you won't need to use a sealant.
I sent my sender unit away to be overhauled before the sender unit tanc now sells, if it had been about then I would have gone for the new one, even after overhaul you still have the problem with its accuracy,  from full to half a tank it goes down slowly, but from half to the reserve light it goes down very quickly, but as soon as the reserve is on I look for fuel, as I know from experience I've only got enough fuel left for about 30 miles.

The gasket is designed for no sealant. Dont use sealant. It will either dissolve over time or set so you cannot replace.
