Title: Heater Matrix
Post by: Spider2 on 03 August, 2024, 09:54:56 AM
I suspect I have a leak in my heater matrix as it sprays out onto the gear lever surround. Sometimes as a drip and sometimes as a small misty spray. It is more than an annoyance that can be lived with so it has to be fixed. I am surprised that it still happens with the heater water valve fully closed, although the diaphram in this may be perished. I have read up on removing the heater matrix and realise that it is no easy job although on my car (Series 1 Sport) it may be easier than later models.
I cannot find a definitive description as how to undertake this job. Has anyone done this on my model, if so, clues and tips please. Alternatively, would a bodge with a can of radseal save me a lot of heartache?

There’s some info on the process on a thread I started a couple of years ago. I still haven’t worked up the enthusiasm to undertake the job! Still, I can manage well enough without the heater, so I just cut the heater matrix out if the cooling water circuit.

I would genuinely be interested to hear how you get on should you proceed with the task.

I think the thread/description is for S2/3/ Mine is S1 which is quite different. For one the heater valve is easily accessable at the top of the engine bay. I think I will blank off the in and out  pipes to the matrix to cure the leak while I scratch my head and build up enthusiasm for a fix. It only started leaking after I stupidly turned the thing on for the first time in 5 years. What baffles me a bit is the water is stone cold!
