Title: Series 2 Front Brake Caliper Bleed Nipples
Post by: neil-yaj396 on 19 August, 2024, 07:46:27 AM
What size are they as standard? My smallest spanner is 8mm and that is too big. 6mm?

My Series 2 Fulvia 3 had 8mm A/F Bleed Nipples, I sent the calipers for rebuild and the company did an excellent job but they did come back with 7mm A/F ones! You would be hard pushed to go any smaller as the thread is M7x1.0

The caliper is a refurb from Omicron and as above my 8mm spanner is way too big. Thanks Simon, will try 7mm first.

It turned out that the bleeds are a tiny 6mm. Fine when new, but they will be a pig after a couple of years unless kept nice and greased. Worth noting if you buy refurbished calipers.

Notwithstanding this, I've finally admitted defeat on this job. With the new caliper fitted there was unsurprisingly no brake pedal. However, when we loosened off the bleeds and pumped the pedal we got nothing, not even a single drip of fluid, and same for the other side.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be? I'm not going to tackle this further myself but it would be interesting to hear what the problem might be. I think issues like this have been posted before and a pressurizing tool was the answer?

Just a thought how old are the flexible pipes ?

In addition to the important issue of flexible hoses, I suggest to just slacken the flare end nuts at the master cylinder one at the time, put a large rag below and see if brake fluid come out when pressing the brake pedal. You may repeat this test with the flare end nuts at the end of the flexible hoses, again one at the time. In this way you would be able to find out if the problem is in the calipers or way above.

A gentle 2psi pressure to the master cylinder may be enough to push fluid through. Otherwise it is patience - go and have a martini or 2 and come back the next day to see fluid all over the floor...
