Title: Stephen Bayley's views on the B20
Post by: ColinMarr on 03 October, 2008, 05:56:37 PM
Here below is an extract from an article by Stephen Bayley that was in the Observer last Sunday. The article was on what SB thinks are the ten sexiest cars ever - the Aurelia B20 is one of them. I can’t vouch for the accuracy of what Bayley writes – sometimes he think he might just make it up for effect – but it is interesting!

saw this off a rep this morning, apparently he saw it, thought it was stunning and thought he'd make me drool and dream of owning 1 by showing me the article, his exact words were " here are kid, now i bet you ain;t got 1 of those!" i replied no............but my dad has  ;D, he was gutted lol, nice to see a lancia recognised as sexy though then again have they ever made an ugly car? b20 is certainly 1 of the most iconic though but i have to say the noise is even more impressive :o

He's right that the B20 is one of the sexiest cars ever (the sexiest car ever?) but I suspect that he invented the rest, including the fiction that the B20 was the very first car to be called a GT.  For the pedants among us, the 1750 Alfa Romeo was available in GS (Gran Sport) or GT (Gran Turismo) form in 1930.

I haven't ever seen this post before but I had occasion to sit next to Stephen Bayley at a dinner to launch Max Mosley's book at the RAC Club a few years ago (that's a separate story) and he really is genuinely extremely  enthusiastic about both the styling of B20's and also the quality of the drive. A man of taste.
