Title: Famous Lancia Drivers
Post by: Aurelia Adam on 14 October, 2009, 05:29:11 PM
By accident, I came across this great website with lots of pics of famous Lancia owners from Bardot in her Aurelia to Nuvolari and his Berlina.  I never knew that Prince Aly Aga Khan (Rita Hayworth's husband) killed himself in a Flaminia Touring.

Worth clicking on the sub-menus to get extra info as well.

I wonder where all the cars are now.

Have fun, Adam

Neil,  I was aware of these four Lancia owners, one I know was a member, the first name on the list who had an integrale, his car is a regular Surrey area attendee with another member now.

Another attribute we can add to the database .... "Famous Past Owner"

The photo of 'Gregory Peck' and his Aurelia looks more like Gary Cooper, then again maybe I spent too much time looking at old westerns with my Dad.

I went to look at a fanalone project some time ago that was previously owned by Bruce Dickinson, lead singer with Iron Maiden. He had painted it black.

And Steve McClaren (the wally with a brolly) used to have a Fulvia Zagato !

J Clarkson is buying (has bought?) a Stratos'.

Hasn't the Queen got a Flaminia state car (Harvey, what's her tag on the Forum?)

Malcolm Fraser (Australian PM) owned a few.

Jan Leeming ( the BBC Newsreader) used to have a Beta Volumex Coupe in the mid 80's! Now, there's a little known fact!

Somewhere along the way I heard that the comedienne Beryl Reid owned a Fulvia Sport, but got fed up with it because the carburettors needed frequent retuning. Sound familiar!

Also, Montague Burton of Burton’s outfitters has two Fulvia 1600 Sports, one of which is now owned by Fred Anderson.

And Peter Ustinov owned an Aprilia which was, and probably still is, owned by Fred Anderson. This Aprilia is an English (Eagle?) bodied convertible. (Did I say it was ugly?)

A few years ago I saw a Beta Montecarlo, the proud owner (I forget who) of which showed off the registration book which showed the first owner to be Emerson Fittipaldi.

One of Gerald Batt’s Lambdas – the one that was owned by the sculptor Olliffe Richmond, was first owned by Count Zabrowski – he who created Chitty-chitty-bang-bang. While checking on the spelling of his name I discover that in 1922 he did Kop Hill in a Ballot in 26 seconds – blimey!

Ed Levin in the USA has emailed me with the same comment and I must admit I also thought it looked like Garry Cooper, so it's "High Noon" for Gregory Peck ;D

Kevin MacBride is right. It is not Gregory Peck but Gary Cooper. And the car is not a saloon but a convertible. But, anyway, it is a famous actor and an Aurelia.

Just remembered another one, but in this case he's infamous:

Bernie Cornfeld. Bernie was a massively successful financial fraudster of the 1960s and for a time based his operations in Switzerlad where he had a fleet of Flaminias at the disposal of other visiting funsters. Wiki quotes him as saying, "I had mansions all over the world, I threw extravagant parties. And I lived with ten or twelve girls at a time."

Must dash to Silverstone…..

Probably counts as a infamous one, from modern times.
The Captain of HMS Nottingham a type 42 Destroyer that ran aground off of Australia in 2003, Commander Farrington OBE.
Owned a 2.0 Dedra. ;D

A Catholic Bishop we had over here once drove a Beta Saloon. He was famous for a few things, a speech he made once (during the Popes visit) about the need to maintain good family values, and years later the revelation that he'd fathered a child. Wonder did he make use of the large rear seats of the Beta.....??

Carlo Bugatti, father of Ettore, was the owner of a Lambda, according to a book I read, probably a Bugatti book, which had a photograph of him with it.

Didn't Enzo Ferrari have a Flaminia Sedan as a family car?

I think Michael Shumacher had a Dedra SW for similar use.

Mike Hawthorn and his father were both Aurelia owners.

The Pope had a special Thesis in its' day.

Was it Tazio Nuvolari who raved about the Augusta and got lots of the other top racing drivers into them?

Stirling Moss' mum had an Appia Zagato. Perhaps famous persons' mothers who owned Lancias is getting a bit too far out there.

Not a 'driver' but my Beta Coupe was supplied new by Richard 'Dickie' Attwood of Le - Mans fame, to his father-in law. So you never know, he may have driven it.

I wrote to him and he confirmed the tale in a lovely handwritten letter.

Probably gonna go straight to hell for this.... but... it would seem that Mr Farinas work had weathered the test of time more so than the big 'G' itself.  Have you seen Ms Bardot recently ??

In the race day programme at the Italian Grand Prix in 2013 where the Lotus team drivers were Kimi Raikkonen and Roman Grosjean, they were asked what we're their favourite best ever roadcars. Link's choice was a Lotus Evora (corporate speak + his wry sense of humour no doubt) whilst Roman Grosjeans choice was a Delta Integrale Evo 2. Presumably because he has one ?

Remember reading a long while ago of Chrissie Hynde coming out of a studio and asking a Fulvia owner if it was a 16 or 1300. Apparently she knew her stuff about them but whether she ever owned one I'm not sure. I'm still getting my head around Penelope Keith in a 1600HF...........that's almost like the Queen driving one.

sad thing was the car was only scrapped about 8 years ago , unfortunately it was done before anyone could have saved it

Long after Frank’s post regarding Mike Hawthorn’s ownership of Aurelias. I’m pretty sure that Mike Hawthorn was (perhaps also) the owner of Aprilias. Just found a link on that.
