lets be honest, ok Toyota had "a problem" (anyone who's ever driven one knows one of the main problems is boredom at the wheel!), but i read alot of articles on Automotive News (an American industry paper/website) & the reaction was totally unjustified. Its almost a complete coinsidence,  (surely!?) that at the time Toyota was being dragged through the mud the American Big 3 were imploding, offering cars no-one in the States wanted to buy & losing vast amounts of market share to Toyota, this was America's pay back, a way to turn American's against Toyota & back to buying from GM, Ford, Chrysler.

I remember one retailer in the US saying in a reply to one of the stories on Automotive News the japs were trying to kill them, sadly he was being quite genuine & there was no hint of sarcasim.

America's Big 3 couldn't fight the Japanese giants of Toyota & Honda fairly, their home products are truly woeful, so they saw this & ran with it, offering i think an extra $2000 off a new Ford/GM/Chrysler if a Toyota was traded in, ofcourse they were doing this for the benefit of the American consumer, afterall Toyota's were unsafe!

It was truly shameful!

If there was not a fault ... why did Toyota produce a modification and spend millions doing a recall?

Toyota were not denying that there was a problem, the "fix" they did was to adjust/change the gas pedal so it would return too its normal position quicker when pressure was taken off it. But they always claimed that this problem was not causing the unintended acceloration American's were having!
