Title: carb fuel level
Post by: dhla40 on 16 October, 2010, 05:19:08 PM
I have just started the engine on my S2 project car which has not run for ten years so as expected I am having a few problems. The carbs are solex 35-16 which should have a fuel level of 18-20mm which I assume is measured from the top face of the main body to the fuel surface , can anyone confirm this and should the floats be fitted or removed. The reason I suspect the float level is that the idle screws have to be almost shut to get a smooth idle, how many turns out is normal for a non emission carb?  The other problem is on pressure checking the cooling system the pressure drops to 1psi after about two minutes, I cannot see any external leaks and looking at the waterpump drive in the cylinder block no coolant seems to be escaping. If the water pump seal has gone is this usually apparent and if so what methods are there to rectify it.

On solex's the floats are checked on a gauge/tool. Your should set idle mix around 1 turn out from shut.

If your water pump seal has gone you would see a puddle!

Do you mean there is a witness hole on the external pump body so that if the seal is leaking coolant will escape from here?

There are two underneath; at 5 and 7 o'clock. They can get blocked.
