Plans are well underway for the last big LMC event of the year, the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. Margaret and I are organising the LMC stand this year and look forward to seeing you all over the weekend. Details of the organisers exclusive club ticket offer for LMC members will be posted in the members section shortly, see also current VL. Further details of cars and other news to follow. Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: SteveGales on 17 October, 2013, 06:26:20 PM Just a quick update on show preparations. Other than a few small details to sort everything seems to be on track with just a month to go.
Margaret and I along with Dave and Ruth Melluish spent last Sunday checking and cleaning the carpet for the show and considering it hadn't seen the light of day since last November it was in surprisingly good condition with no 'nasties' lurking when we un-rolled it !! We've been allocated (LMC) a 8mx15m stand this year which should allow us to fit 5 cars on comfortably and give enough space for hospitality and Regalia. Betaboyz and the Montecarlo Consortium who are adjoining us again this year will also have space for 4-5 cars each. To finish off what has been a great year for the Fulvia 50 celebrations we thought it would be nice to make a feature of the model, so we have 3 Fulvias one of each body style. Leading the display will be Brian Hilton's Berlina 2c, better known as 'Fay' and fresh from another 2500 mile trouble-free adventure to Turin on the 'Knights Rally'. Representing the coupe will be the Fanalone CUH 20H of Robin and Jonathan Lacey, well known on the forum for its race against time rebuild for the Goodwood Track Day/ Fulvia 50 weekend back in May. If you didn't see it in the flesh at Goodwood it's well worth seeing and not only for the colour! For the Sport / Zagato body style we have the gorgeous burgundy example of Peter Loftus. Completing the stand line-up will be the stunning integrale evo 2 of Andy McFarlane which recently featured in a great article on the Delta and Kielder Forest in Classic and Sportscar magazine. Finally we have the lovely light blue series 1 Aprilia of Cesare Ferrari which won its class at the AGM weekend in July. We are also hoping to have the cut-away Fulvia engine on the stand courtesy of Peter Gerrish. Richard and Helen will be present with regalia (Christmas shopping?) and of course plenty of Italian food and drink. Many thanks in advance to all the owners for generously giving of their time and their cars! Don't forget the club special ticket offer (see membership section) and hope to see you all next month. Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: SteveGales on 14 November, 2013, 07:28:25 PM Well, all set up and ready to go!
Margaret and I arrived at the NEC at 9am and met up with Dave Melluish and Simon Davies to set up the stand. Carpet fitters finished after a couple of hours and we could crack on building the towers etc, John Bower from Betaboyz kindly helped too. All the cars arrived in plenty of time and although I do say so myself the stand looks great, we finished around 4pm. Many thanks again to all the owners. We look forward to seeing you all over the weekend. Margaret and Steve PS No point in taking photos today as there is reduced hall lighting. To Steve Margaret & the team a big thank you, sorry I couldn't stay but I'll see you sunday. The NEC was always the weekend of my year, and if I miss anything of our yearly cycle of events, it is this. So many memories of Thursday set up, and that wonderful moment on Friday morning when it all kicked off. Better than going to the 'proper' motor show when I was a little lad. I'm sure I walked around the place with a permanent grin. So greetings to all, I will be with you in spirit - have a drink for me and wish us well. Special greetings to our wonderful friends Steve and Margaret, and much love to Emma.

(I you want a couple on the website then feel free to upload on the database or send me a couple)
Friday was busy, but Saturday was , well , packed ! I did a bit of shop minding and looking up it seemed like a tide of people shuffling along ! It seemed to me the show was smaller and there was a lot more for sale and they'd changed the layout completely (I can never remember where we were the year before!) But , as Andy said, it's a great way of spending some time. One of the side effects can be that conversations on the stand have hour long intermissions while chatting to the visitors but no matter! Andy's integrale was often swamped with photographers and the fulvias were also popular and I was told how complicated the Aprilia suspension is by a guy who worked on them as an apprentice - but also said how engineered they were - which is always said. It's also worth mentioning that having the cut-away engine and Robin's slide show also worked well (IMHO) I think that the stand layout and selection of cars was great and the location was also good - the show resembled a giant U and we were right in the middle where it wasn't too wide - so everyone would've passed by. I've filed file all the window sheets in the library in LMCHistoricDocuments/NEC archives/2013 Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: fensaddler on 18 November, 2013, 02:50:07 AM I've said it before and I'm no doubt like an old record but - you are very lucky to have a show like the NEC, and we are very lucky to have a club like the LMC, that can still turn out a selection of cars like this every year. Well done to everyone involved (I know how much hard graft it takes, but also how satisfying it can be...).
Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: andymc on 18 November, 2013, 09:06:46 AM Great day yesterday (Sunday) at the NEC. Nice to put faces to names. Spent a lot of time talking to people about the car and even got approached by two people for a chat when filling up on the way home :)
Many thanks to Steve and Margaret for organising the stand and for your hospitality. We felt very welcome. A couple of photos from me, although I don't know how to operate any of the settings on my camera that would counter the sodium lighting in the NEC... Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: Parisien on 18 November, 2013, 09:18:54 AM Loved the pics.........don't care about the sodium lighting!!!
Seems much busier than last years.........did we succeed in signing up any new members, any other Lancias come to light when enthusiasts memories stimulated by the great display? P Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: sparehead3 on 18 November, 2013, 11:48:32 AM We did sign up new members on both days when I was there ... and I managed to get two out of two hits with people that had owned cars which were showing on the ex-members listing (which is a test load I have of full set of cars) - it was (personally) really pleasing to be able to find the registration, model and build date of the car! Both were joining the club (if I remember correctly)
Andy : your picture shows what the integrale is like at a show - bonnet up is always a draw too .... :) Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: the.cern on 18 November, 2013, 03:50:25 PM Congratulations to everyone involved in putting together another brilliant display. The cars look stupendous as always and the engine is a winner.
To my mind, there should always be a purely technical piece on display, if only to demonstrate Lancia's great innovation and how function and form were always put first with the accountants following up a poor second. Just as an example, imagine an Aprilia rear axle assembly on display, particularly if it was alongside a beautiful Berlina such as AUJ 270. Hopefully next year I will be able to assist in some way rather than view it secondhand, somewhat enviously, from the sidelines. Andy Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: SteveGales on 18 November, 2013, 08:02:56 PM Well 'The NEC' over for another year, as always extremely tiring but very enjoyable. We finally got home (10 mins from the NEC) at 8pm on Sunday after the stand breakdown.
The hall looked almost as deserted again as the photo Brian took on set-up day. It really is amazing the transformation from empty hall to the bustling display you see on the show days. Thanks for all the kind comments on the stand, it is very much appreciated, obviously the 'cars are the stars' but they wouldn't be there without the great generosity and enthusiasm of all the owners. So to Brian, Robin, Peter, Andy and Cesare a very big thank you. From David , Margaret and myself many thanks also to all who helped on the stand over the weekend, Peter Gerrish for the fantastic cutaway engine which proved a real hit and to Steve P and Mark Lima for producing the excellent car information cards and windscreen banners. Last count I think we had signed 7 new members with many more application forms given out so hopefully that number will increase. On a personal note my biggest thanks has to go to Margaret who dealt with all the form filling , of which there is a LOT, sending passes out sorting all the food and drink/ hospitality etc and to cap it all she also helped get the engine off and on the van on the set-up/breakdown days!! Steve Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: Parisien on 18 November, 2013, 08:11:11 PM Take a round of applause Steve and Margaret, my guy whose doing my Aurelia visited the stand and was very impressed, well done to all involved and it reflects very well on those who provide this years cars and all those who took time out to man the stand.
P Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: andymc on 18 November, 2013, 08:20:51 PM Steve - this is what it was like round the car most of the time the bonnet was up. Very busy.

Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: Dilambdaman on 18 November, 2013, 10:29:26 PM Yes indeed, a wonderful show. A credit to those who put it all together and especially Steve and Margaret. It's incredible the amount of time and dedication these two put into the event for weeks before and after the show. Over the three days they worked tirelessly to ensure that those who bring the cars, those who staff the stand and the visitors are made to feel welcome and appreciated. They can rest assured that this year it was a job well done.
During the three days there was a constant stream of visitors wanting to discuss all things Lancia and to share their own experiences. It amazes me how many Lancias and particularly Fulvias are out there as yet unknown to the LMC. Most bizarre encounter for me was with the man who told me that he had a Fulvia Estate! He had grafted a Citroen BX back end on to a Fulvia Coupe and which he said looked pretty good. I hope that he will post some pictures here soon. Robin. Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: andymc on 18 November, 2013, 11:26:40 PM Robin - talking of odd combinations. A chap from the Saab stand next to us showed me a picture of his Renault 21 turbo, in Monza red, complete with integrale Evo bonnet!
The Lantroen Fulbx sounds intruiging to say the least! Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: SteveGales on 19 November, 2013, 08:52:35 AM I must not forget to mention the invaluable contribution that Betaboyz and the Montecarlo Consortium make to the weekend, it's so much better
when we can have the three clubs together to create a Lancia 'Super' stand. Fantastic choice of cars and of course the usual great banter and camaraderie the whole weekend....even if we do have to keep an eye on our biscuits!! Nice to catch up. Thanks Peter, I was very pleased by the interest shown in her. She is looking good but don't look too closely around the bottom as there are a few bits need attention now, but considering she was resprayed in 1998/9, as after all the dents were knocked out and primed she looked like a leopard! she's doing very well, had a bit of a scare on the way home as I'd just run into heavy traffic after passing the M6 Services when the fuel warning light came on, when I got to the M1 the traffic was near stationary, so I took the first turn off which is the Daventry turn for the A5, the A5 being a good alternative route home, but by time I reached an open filling station at Weedon, I was sweating Blood and "Fay" must have been running on fumes! I didn't fill up before taking her up to the NEC as we were requested to not have a lot of fuel on board, and I didn't see anywhere between the NEC and the M6. I was very glad to be able to take part, and it was good also to renew acquaintances.
On another stand meanwhile, that of the Allard Owners Club, I had the pleasure of meeting an old associate of my late father, who was mad on Allards, and have maybe been able to fill a gap in the history of an Allard Le Mans car that was there. On my fuel consumption, for those who are interested, I think I must have miscalculated on the way up, because going home I got the usual thirty or so to the gallon, doing sixty five on the motorway. Can you afford not to run an Aprilia? Ciao a tutti Cesare Title: Re: Classic Motor Show The NEC, Birmingham 15 16 17 November 2013 Post by: fay66 on 25 November, 2013, 11:35:49 AM I forgot to mention that while at the show on sunday I called in at the Pilkington Glass stand, to enquire if they could supply Fulvia Windscreens etc.
They were very helpful and very soon came up with the answer, a new laminated W/screen for my 2c comes out at around £250, a figure that was far less than I was expecting, and for the Coupe comes out at just over £200, another Fulvia owner went over to see them about if they could supply a rear screen as well, he is about to have his removed and everyone who is working on the car are worried in case the screen breaks, then what do you do? He was assured that Pilkingtons can supply a rear w/screen as well, but I can't remember the price he was quoted. So no need to trawl ebay or the ads to see if you can find a windscreen any longer, you can get a new one with the added advantage that it's laminated as well. Very good article about Pilkingtons and glass for classics in 'Classics' December 2013 Issue 210. Just a cautionary note to this. There was a discussion a while ago on the Betaboyz forum re windscreens for Beta Coupe/Spyder. Pilkingtons state it is available, but for whatever reason when one of the members had one replaced under insurance the glass just did not fit and was supplied direct from Pilkingtons. This saga went on for a long time and cannot remember if there was a satisfactory outcome (it was a while ago). The concensus was that the jig or whatever they use was not what it used to be or just plain wrong .. I have no other knowledge of them than what was listed on the forum, but worth considering. Ideally anecdotal stories of one being supplied recently would be useful.
