Title: help needed
Post by: chugga boom on 08 December, 2013, 07:54:30 PM
I have a Lambda coming in for some work this week, its my 1sst time to work on one and feel "honoured" to do the work as its my dream car, its a late series torpedo and I could do with some photo's of the floor propshaft tunnel and front brake mechanism, the front brakes are complete however the cross shaft under the floor and the pulleys off the sliding pillars for the cables are also missing so could do with as mush help as possible making this car as correct as I can, many thanks in advance

ps I presume correct me if i'm wrong as I've never seen one before, but would it have plywood floors?? or would they be pressed steel?? , if plywood what holds them in place??

I've just had a CABG so not up to crawling under Sheila at the moment to take photos.  I have posted the appropriate tavole from the spares catalogue under the "Technical information only" thread on which you will also find lots of useful information.   I have reduced the quality a bit, if you need higher resolution I can send by email.  Good luck!    I may also have a few spares if you need them such as the pulleys (I think) and a cross shaft.  Check against the tavole and let me know what you need - there is also the Lambda Consortium for spares.
Floors are thick plywood held in place by long bolts.

David thanks for the info, I will let you know on the parts situation and thanks for the offer, i'm sure my customer will take you up on the offer, if you could send me the TAV's to my email that would be brilliant, many thanks james info@mineratyres.com

There are a number of spares needed that I do not have but must be lurking in someone's shed.  Come on, chaps, there is a Lambda to be rescued!

James, I have a number of spares for this area of the car, all in rather poor condition, as my car was completely worn out. Also I can email you photos of the propshaft tunnel construction as my car is still bare in this area, let me know what views you need.It has been largely reconstructed as it was butchered in the 30's to fit a Ford Model B engine, so you might need to check it's correct enough for you.

We have an Aprilia appointment soon anyway, I hope!

Regards

Tony Stephens

Tony thanks for the offers, I will let you know whats needed when I know myself fully, this car is shortened and fitted with a flat head V8 hense no tunnel as the gearbox has been shifted back, I've come up with a plan now how to sort it and after looking at photo's of standard cars this will be a real 1 off because of where the gearbox now sits , aprilia, shouldn't be long now as 2 cars are near ready to go 3rd and 4th well underway 5th (lambda) studied and mentally sorting out what I'm doing with it before diving in and potentially getting it wrong, theres another car for engine work booked in before you but I'm hoping that will be arriving in the next week or so and my father will be doing that not me so hopefully end of the month if that's ok with you, still waiting for sills and floors however I feel confident to make these myself if needed, will be in touch very soon j

myself and Ron thought it maybe of interest to post some pictures of progress on the "hill climber", I'm making an intire floor out of steel, will keep you updated as it comes along

Off to a good start!!

Handy bit of pipe to bend the tunnel over?   Got a long folder for those edges or bits of angle iron?

David

Edwards 3foot rolls made the tunnel which has 3 different radius's in it so couldn't be made over a piece of pipe, yes I have a 2 meter folder now which I bought to make sills on........and now tunnels

Three radii on roll sounds quite a complicated procedure.  Lots of test strips and notes on the back of a handy envelope or is the machine calibrated?

Big roller, big folder, heavy swager/bead roller, wheeling machine, shrinker/stretcher.

I'm trying to think what you're missing...

Fly press?   Guillotine?

I'm trying to remember if you ever got the deep throat shrinker.

Chance of a photo of the rollers and the folder?  (sad I know...)

David

How are you going to fit the gear lever to that - presumably shorten the rod exceedingly and modify the aluminium housing so as to disguise to some extent the intrusion of the gearbox?   Also, how much shortened, enough for one-piece prop shaft?

lincage had already been shortened (not very well) I will put some pics up of what I have with the car and what I make as I go along, I would say its been shortened by about 18inches

Mighty stuff!!

The toggle press on the floor looks interesting - if that's the right name for them.

That "long reach polishing mop" looks like it should have a story attached.

it does! it came out of a hospital and was used for polishing artificial limbs , came up faulty on ebay a few months ago , there were some broken conections on the speed controller where we thing the machine had been dropped in transit , super Dad to the rescue with his electronics/engineering background and was repaired in a few hours, funny story for you was watching him test run the motor 1st ............with my battery charger! don't ask me how as all I can tell you is its 110v ac unit and the charger is 12>24v dc but he proved the motor was fine before I bought it  ???

more progress, new inner sill side members made to strengthen the sides, in effect making chassis legs the full length of the car, floor pans made and fitted, just cross members to go now then move on to the rear floor and underneath

Strength like that it's ready for a desert crossing with supplies for a month.  Going to box in or strap under the prop or leave it open?

Looking good.

Chance of a photo of "the car" as a whole in the next batch?

David

Indeed, great progress - I saw the car in November , before you started so good to see it moving on so quickly !

Out of interest, what thickness steel do you use ? 0.6, 0.8, 1mm ?

Title: Re: help needed
Post by: chugga boom on 03 March, 2014, 09:58:19 PM
the floors are 1mm, the tunnel and bulkhead are 1.2mm inner sills are 1mm, I generally don't drop below 0.8 on anything but structural I use as heavy as I can

I am not sure that I can believe my eyes, an invisible rotisserie!!!  The last time I saw this done they did at least have the decency to roll it onto an old mattress!! I presume there is something supporting the top of the bodywork that, with the camera angle, we cannot see?  What makes it more impressive is that you have done it with that damn great V8 lump in it.

So, why do you need her on her side? Could you not have used the lift?

As usual James, very impressive ........... was it all manpower and how did you control her after you reached the tipping point?

Andy, its a handy thing about being I the middle of a tyre shop and bodyshop , 5 strong lads and a stack of old tyres  ;) , it is supported well and believe it or not actually not that heavy , all of us were shocked how easily it went over , engine and box needs to stay in to make sure all the brake linkage clears and works also gear linkage and pedals , overhead welding is never as neat as welding side on or downwards hence rolling it over, car is extremely strong now so I have no concerns or worries about it and this way I can make sure everything is 100% on it , just remember this is a real "one off" and everything needs to stay together to make sure it all works together , easy bit done now (metal work) now the fun begins!!!, its a shame we hadn't done it before you came over, i'd loved to have seen your face  :D

Interesting prop shaft.  I would think take the opportunity to get a Hardy-Spicer one made (see technical thread).

it is with 2 adaptor plates to adapt at either end of the prop , if I remember I will put a picture up or you will see more as it goes back together, this was already done in oz

a few more pics of the Lambda, had to make a center cross member to mount an astura cross shaft on for the brakes, used an aprilia pedal box and made a lever to reverse the action of the brake pedal, hopefully will be back on it again soon however I'm as always up to my eyeballs with various other projects also

I hope the rear axle oil seals are in good condition, or there will be a lot of oil in one of the brakes. Or did you think of that and drained it first?
Regards, John
