Title: Lighting rheostat s2/3 coupe
Post by: blueboxer on 13 January, 2014, 09:30:03 PM
Did a quick search but couldn't find anything listed for this so apologies if this has been covered before. I'm referring to the silver dimmer thingy underneath and to the left of the rev counter . Presumably, it provides some variability to the instrument lighting. Mine doesn't seem to want to move or turn. Could someone tell me how it is supposed to operate. The dash lights are very dim so I definitely need to do something  to cure this. I'm assuming the unit may be stuck on low or failed but it would help if I knew what it was actually meant to do -  i.e push, pull , turn.
I have the handbook but it is not mentioned other than to point out what it is.

Similarly, there are 2 pull switches - 1 either side of the vents that don't appear to do anything and aren't listed in the handbook either. One is maybe for some front fogs/spots that are no longer fitted to the car but as for the left switch, I've no idea what it is/was for.

One switch, the one on the left of the heater controls operates the rear window de-mister , the other on the right operates the hazard warning lights . The rheostat switch should turn clockwise to brighten the dash and counter clockwise to dim the dash, the only problem is that it can seize . On my Fulvia Coupe I by-passed the switch as it just wasn't working  and the lights wouldn't come on the dash at all. The other thing I did was to replace all the bulbs in the dash cluster with new bulbs and this made a huge difference to the brightness . Thanks David  :)

If your car is not of an age to have hazard lights, then the other push-pull switch switch may be a blank switch with nothing connected.

My car is a 1974 model year. I had a 1972 model with nothing attached to the switch on the right . :)

If you want a rheostat, I think we have a couple in a box somewhere
