Title: Project Binky Post by: peteracs on 18 July, 2014, 06:50:45 AM Hi All
Not sure if any of you have seen this on You Tube, but although not Lancia related, it did bring to mind the fabrication skills of some of the folk on here..... (oh and made in a humorous way which adds to it for me anyway) http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=project+binky+-+episode+1 (original link came from one of the guys on the Stratos EC forum) Peter Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: fay66 on 19 July, 2014, 12:24:31 AM I've just sat and watched the first 3 episodes, Brilliant with a great sense of Humour, but being as it's nearly 1.30am I'm going to bed, but I've book Marked the other 3 episodes to watch later ::)
Brian 8227 8) Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: DavidLaver on 19 July, 2014, 07:05:57 AM I watched the first - a guilty pleasure - and thought I'd wait to plug the laptop into the TV and subject the kids to it. I liked his "grinder scarecrow" - he has a rack with four grinders to save having to change disks. Perhaps Chugga could tell us which four. Perhaps a 1mm cut, grind, flap sander and a wire brush? Perhaps a thick and thin cut but not the brush? Looks like a scarecrow as the rack also holds a full face mask and gloves. The surprise was that they only looked like these: http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/power-tools/grinders/angle_grinders/-specificproducttype-4_5__grinders/Performance-Power-600W-Angle-Grinder-Grey-Red-115mm-12389438 Having burnt out my grinder of 20 years the other day (proper flash, flame, smoke - blue bosch bought second hand) I thought a Hitachi would do me (am very happy with a drill I wire brush with for hours and a router they use in HSS) but it only lasted two weeks. Perhaps unlucky, perhaps they don't make them like they used to. I went for a DeWalt to replace it. So far so good - good long flex, slimmer grip, better handle, more robust guard that clips on to remove or move, easier switch, less vibration and the promise that it ducts the dust away from the motor. The other brag is that the air vent is not just where you'd want to hold it. David Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: the.cern on 19 July, 2014, 08:04:22 AM I normally have four 115mm angle grinders on the go, 1mm cut, abrasive polydisc, wire brush and mule skinner. The 225mm angle grinder has a diamond disc for concrete, stone, brick and etc. Jim, in addition to those on my list, also keeps a flap sander and a different wire brush on his collection. Electric cable trip hazard is one of the big H & S considerations in the workshop!!!
Andy Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: DavidLaver on 19 July, 2014, 07:19:19 PM You have all four and what you REALLY wanted was to have had it blasted in the first place... I must try the mule skinner. David Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: the.cern on 20 July, 2014, 06:56:33 AM David, please!! I do not want, or indeed need, to be reminded that I should have had it blasted in the first place .....
Photograph of Jim's angle grinder rack, the brackets hang on Jim's home fabricated folding work bench. This bench is meant for lightweight work only, it is not meant to be a place to 'just put something down while I look at this/ge ta cup of tea or whatever' and which then stays there for a year. Unfortunately the latter scenario is what happens in practice which is why it looks the way it does!! It's not that long ago I watched it and I thought there were still 2 or 3 episodes to run.Next episode of Escargot now available... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jU0bHi-JFiQ Peter Brian 8227 8) Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: peteracs on 10 June, 2019, 09:12:35 PM Hi Brian
No, still going however looks like they are trying hard to get it completed as the most recent episodes have come relatively quickly after each other. Escargot is their car transporter/camper project. Peter Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: DavidLaver on 22 February, 2020, 02:34:27 PM Binky has gone for paint and they're smartening up the running gear. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHvBHWBzzB7NyU5tIiEZHBg Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: DavidLaver on 22 February, 2020, 02:42:25 PM With a spot of the man flu I enjoyed a day binge watching this build. He had a HIGHLY modified E55 (active rear wing, rocker arm suspension in the boot, turbos in the boot to supplement the supercharger...) which went pop, having rebuilt the engine he built a better car to put it in to be cheaper on tyres and brakes and to be easier to work on. Tube frame, makes his own suspension, cut and shut job on uprights, fits the electrically adjustable steering and gets the peddles going back and forth, pneumatic gear change off his own ecu, fits engine management, strips the supercharger and makes manifolds for "just" turbos. Does proper sums for crumple zone, "not very good at CFD" so make a wind tunnel to test a model (that's about 45 seconds of the ten hours). Carbon undertray, having done tests slops the resin on with a paint brush to get it done on time.
https://www.youtube.com/user/asdfss8215/featured Here's a summary of what he got done IN ONE YEAR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Li3HNG9_Q Five years back, I think in Pakistan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqMU3OczjmM 8:30 for the crash and cops. Am half expecting Clarkeson to be doing the voice over and doing his very sorry face. Somewhere I think it says only two months for that design and build... He combines chop-shop confidence with pukka graduate engineer smarts and HUGE energy. As he didn't get finished before the snows (Canada) he hauled it to California for some track days behind his broken road car (been busy on the racer...) which I worked out is about the distance from here to Istanbul. Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: frankxhv773t on 22 February, 2020, 08:08:41 PM It's a different world, no tax, no insurance, no type approval but the police let him off after crashing into another vehicle. The self build car C2 is a bit agricultural compared with Project Binky but a good still fascinating. I suspect Colin Chapman would have wanted to "add lightness".
Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: DavidLaver on 22 February, 2020, 11:40:25 PM Quite different objectives to Binky, but amazing work. Building the frame without a jig was impressive. All within a standard double garage... There's a Binky interview with them being relatively sensible answering questions. The design for the heating and ventilation (and aircon!) was the one that got the dark haired one to raise his eyebrows when he saw the "cardboard octopus" or whatever. That flip front over such a tight packed engine bay, with a normal bonnet as well, with a remote control to flip it and the ability to lift it off. Bonkers how the spec went up and up. I like the effort to make the bulkhead look like a factory pressing. The flexishaft drive over the top of the engine is the one bit that looks odd vs a production car. Title: Re: Project Binky Post by: frankxhv773t on 23 February, 2020, 11:35:43 AM I remain indebted to them for C.A.D.
