Title: Correct location of condenser?
Post by: mikegamble on 21 December, 2014, 09:10:00 PM
Due to having a few electrical gremlins, I've started going through the engine bay electrics and cleaning up all the contacts and checking the quality of electrical connections/wires etc.

I was slightly surprised to see this, the condenser attached (poorly) to the coil and then just resting on the bodywork! However, I did struggle to find an obvious locating place for the condenser, can anybody show me a picture of its correct location/mounting, please?

Is there a workshop manual I can download anywhere? The main battle I'm having is the fact that I don't know my way around these cars and a WSM would be a blessing!

Hi Mike,

The LMC Librarian, Chris Hopkins can supply you with a photocopy of the 2000 workshop manual.

I've got one which I no longer need and apart from a few oily finger prints is in OK condition. Perhaps more exciting I have an original Spare Parts Catalogue in excellent condition which I could be tempted to part with at the right price!

PM me if either is of interest to you.

Robin.

Hi Mike, I can't see a piccy of the "condenser" that you are referring too, but if its just hanging off the coil, i would say it is more likely to be a radio suppressor than the condenser

Hi Mike

You may need to reduce the size of the photo as the forum limits the upload size. I think from memory it is around 800kb.

Condensers usually simply connect from the low tension connection to earth on the side of the distributor. It was the earthing which I eventually found was intermittent, which caused the misfire on my Augusta a few years ago, resulting in a broken crankshaft a few days later.

Can I upload from direct from 'my pictures' or do I have to have them hosted and list them that way?

Mike you can upload direct from 'my pictures' as long as they meet the size limit or have been reduced first, if you click on additional options(below left) it tells you that the maximum attachment size is 4096kb for a maximum of 8 posts (photos) if you have more than 8 photos to post you'll have to put them in a seperate post.
I usually aim for about 400kbs per photo so even when uploading 8 photos you are still below the limit with good quality..

Mike - it is a radio interference suppressor – forget about it!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Good news!
However, where should/how should it be correctly mounted? It's a bit 'gash' like that!

The condenser should be mounted on the side of the distributor. i.e. as close to the points as possible. There is a threaded hole and mounting screw there.
