Title: Gearbox dip stick Post by: Justin McArdle on 01 December, 2015, 08:45:01 PM I have an oil leak on the top of my gearbox which necessitates occasional topping up. I find it very difficult to see the level on the black plastic dipstick. There are two small marks on the dipstick but difficult to see the level and I am wary of overfilling. Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks Title: Re: Gearbox dip stick Post by: lancialulu on 01 December, 2015, 10:32:18 PM The full mark is about 1/4 inch from the lower mark. Very difficult to see. Use a clean rag to dry off the dip stickesp in the groove to see the level better.

The main problem is that unlike the metal sump dipstick where the level can be seen very clearly the gearbox dipstick is black, plastic and cylindrical. It's just difficult to see the oil on the dipstick - and the microscopic level indicator dots don't help either!
I usually lie the dipstick against some kitchen roll to see where the oil level is. Title: Re: Gearbox dip stick Post by: frankxhv773t on 02 December, 2015, 10:23:27 PM When checking any oil I always have a piece of white kitchen paper to wipe the dip stick before reinserting it to take a reading so I would be with you on laying it on white paper towel to get the level. However if you drilled through where the microscopic dot markers are as Brian suggests you could just hold it up to the light. If you can see light through it then the oil isn't up to that level.
I expect a spare dipstick to experiment on would be nice. Frank T Title: Re: Gearbox dip stick Post by: John B on 03 December, 2015, 03:04:17 PM Wind some white masking tape around the dip stick after wiping the oil off and then re-insert.
Should make it a lot easier to see the level against a lighter background. Remove the tape afterwards though. Title: Re: Gearbox dip stick Post by: Justin McArdle on 04 December, 2015, 02:14:12 PM For the uninitiated a couple of photos of the dips tick in question.
