I have opened my speedo up as it was under reading badly and the trip meter was not working (drive was seized - now repaired).

I noted the red ribbon round its drum was sticky on the underside, and the plastic drum was also sticky (from the ribbon). I cleaned the drum, and tried to clean the back of the ribbon with toluene but it remained sticky....

I wondered when Veglia (back in the day) made these ribbon speedos whether they invented a permanently sticky (akin to post-it note stickyness - not yet invented!!) ribbon to act as some sort of damping.

Can anyone tell me if they have done an autopsy on their Flavia speedo????

Update.

After putting it back together and bench testing I was not happy with the continuing stickiness of the red part of the ribbon on its drum. It caused the speedo to delay reading and under read.

So apart again. Not for the faint-hearted. Take plenty of photos (I did not before the mechanism of string and wheels came undone by accident!!).

I tried toluene (panel wipe) again but the stickiness remained. I tried Iso-propol alcohol and that did the trick albeit some (little) of the red came off. When dry the ribbon was no longer sticky.

Then working out how to re-assemble..... which was achieved (sorry no photos).

Bench tested and now have a smooth speedo .

The trip meter had seized on its driving gear which has snapped the minute alloy drive shaft from the odometer. I sleeved the original drive shaft and reconnected the two having freed off the trip driving gear (WD40 and 3in1 oil). Now works a treat.

Sounds like a fun kitchen table job - and very satisfying result

Actually I am not allowed to use the kitchen table for car stuff so the garage floor had to do!!!

Proved just now - so nice to see how fast this Vignale goes. I can confirm Colin Marr's earlier experience of 20 mph/1000 rpm in 4th is very fast at 2/3rds redline
