Title: Augusta handbrake return spring
Post by: ben on 02 November, 2017, 08:50:15 PM
I have recently started work on the Gussie I imported from Israel a few years ago.

Having spent a small fortune on having all the rust in the body/chassis cut out and repaired I am now working on the brakes.
I have run into a problem on the nearside rear where the handbrake camshaft was completely seized. I have managed to free it but have now discovered that the return spring is broken.
So I am wondering if there is any one out there who might have a spare.
This is probably the tip of the iceberg as my rebuild progresses but any suggestions welcome.
Ben

Images to follow as the ones from my phone are apparently too big for the system!

Hi Ben,

Paul Savage Springs advertises to copy any spring and made a door handle spring for Modestine in 2003!

Robin.

Thanks Paul/Brian

Hopefully picture to follow.
Note--I think they are handed!

They are handed and I only have the other one.
If you remake some I would be happy to contribute and have a pair as the one I have shows some distress.
If you need a pattern you can use mine.
Brian

I'll have a new pair, too, if you go into production.

I have found my spare pair of springs. They seem to be OK. I can send them to you, if you would like them.
Regards, John (I'll need your address)

Go down to the blacksmith's shop and he'll make one for thee.  (Alas for the Olden Times!)

I have found that those springs are on the weak side especially when there is some friction in the flexible cable guides. On my car there are additional return springs fitted, to assist the original springs. (purists forgive me!)

If it comes to adjustment, the brake shoes are adjusted first, and then the cabel is adjusted in lenght so that after the first 3 clicks on the hand brake lever the shoes start to bind on the drum.

I hope that helps  Karl
