Thema 16v timing belt change
« on: 31 January, 2018, 10:07:44 PM »
Does anyone have any Thema workshop manuals which show how to change the timing belt? Particularly after torque values for the tensioner, etc and whether the crank pully bolt thread is normal or reverse thread to loosen.
Car's a 1989 16v N/A.

Thanks in advance.

Matt.

I've written a piece for the Thema Dedra Consortium that explains this procedure, But Brian may have already talked you through.

It's not too hard, but it does need a reasonable degree of mechanical experience and self-belief.

Mike I've not been contacted up to now and i would suggest your write up would be more use than what I can offer.

I don't know if the attached counts as approved procedure.

I have such a tool ( a pair actually) to compress suspension springs. Always like to see stuff used laterally.
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

That's actually my picture. I slightly modified the spring compressor's "Fingers" by cutting a step in them with an angle grinder so that they could get a grip on the teeth of the balancer shaft pulley.

If anyone has a better idea I'm all ears, but the original tool is dam hard to come by.

Definitely replace the bearing sited behind the front balance-shaft pulley, as I've seen quite a few where this one was 'forgotten', resulting in a locked up bearing running in opposite direction of the timing belt, and 'eating' right through it...
Now from the foto's I conclude this will be intended, but I thought an extra word of warning would'nt hurt.

And this is a picture of the same engine after fitting:
New water pump
New Crankshaft oil seal
New Balancer shaft oil seal
New timing belt
New timing belt tensioner / bearing
New bearing for timing belt guide pulley
New Balance belt
New balance belt tensioner / bearing

Plus replacing all the auxiliary belts afterwards.

A good days labour, but well worth the effort.

Just in the process of doing this myself, in regards to the use of the spring compressor, good idea, but if you have an impact gun (or can get hold of one) this bolt comes loose quite easily with the old belt locking it all up and you won't need to run the risk of anything slipping and being damaged.
Crank pulley bolt is left hand thread, so clockwise to undo!
Enjoy, Marcus
