Something I have not made time for in the past but having done one now, I can recommend that it is worthwhile the hours of fettling, especially when it is something which you can do indoors on these cold winter days. Not very clear but the first shot shows how buckled the original card had got due to damp, if you would like to see the other before and after pictures, I can email them to you.
The original covering was held onto the card with very short legged staples which had rusted badly.  After much consideration, I have refitted the covering with tank tape accepting that it may not last as long as the staples but due to the condition of the lower edge of the covering, felt that the tape would hold it all together better that new staples, even if I could find the right size and attach them successfully, which I had my doubts.
Once I have wasxoiled inside the door I will attach some plastic sheet, which was not there before, to try to keep as much damp inside the door and off the new card as possible.
New card (Millboard) came from Woolies, a large piece (61"x49") for £17 and enough to do 3 doors and a bag of new fixing clips for c£4 so not an expensive job.

Looks good however with the warm summer weather, the tape may not hold when subject to hot sun.
I think I would look to fix with stainless steel staples as well.

Possibly, but the clips along the bottom and sides and the stainless steel strip hold the card quite well, but time will tell.

Chris - looks like a job well done!  A question for you.  Do your door cards have the chrome decor strip near the bottom, and if so did you happen to notice (while you had the boards removed) how the strips are fixed to the vinyl?

Hi norm I did mine last year there are clips that are retained on the reverse side of the trim they have spikes like a staple that go in to holes in the board and are folded back

Norm, the silver strips are remarkably flexible and mine stayed attached to the black plastic, even after scraping the foam and plastic cover off the old card which bent them but they returned to being flat.
I did find that the new clips I bought were not exactly the same and would not line up with the holes, so I reused the old ones and they still fitted well.
