His was the voice of F1. An enthusiast who genuinely loved the sport.
One of his Murrayisms (and his auto-biography title): "Unless Im very much mistaken, I am very much mistaken" Pure gold!
RIP Murray

A legend, but what a life he had, the voice of F1 when it was still interesting.

Murray was part of our motoring lives. At boarding school Matron let me and a chum listen to motor racing commentary on her wireless - this was in the late '40s so no doubt I heard Murray's first GP commentary and so many more since then. A real enthusiast. RIP

I think one of the things that made Murray Walker's commentating so accessible was that he himself seemed a bit surprised to be in such an important position. AS a listener you felt you were along side him rather than being lectured to by an expert.

For me F1 has actually become interesting again in the last couple of years even if it is a case of who is going to come second to the supremely accomplished Mr Hamilton. The coming season looks promising, with a closer match between the cars.

Although I was a Formula One fan as a child (obsessed by Lotus, and upset by the death of Jim Clark and later of Graham Hill), I don't particularly recall the voice of Murray Walker from that time, but I do recall his TV work from the Prost/Senna era and beyond, and particularly enjoyed his double act with James Hunt.
