Front suspension fluid leakage
« on: 21 March, 2025, 03:04:25 PM »
How much is "normal" front suspension fluid leakage? My front suspension was rebuilt by a very reputable Lancia specialist and has about 15,000 miles (25,000 km) on it. What should I reasonably expect for leakage at this time?

There are two different compartments in the sliding pillar - the top one is filled with either 20W or 30W from the chamber in the engine compartment. I'd be surprised if you have that much mileage on it without having replenished it - usually around 500 miles for a spritz or two. You can hear a clunking sound if it's empty. It's usual for it to seep around the pillar and need regular refilling.

The lower chamber is filled from a filler upturned a bit at the bottom of the pillar. Usually doesn't leak out, and takes a heavier oil (it varies - different folks use from 90W to 250W) although some have also used grease instead. That one should just be checked and filled up to the bottom of the filler hole.

Thanks for the reply, GG. Yes, I know about the upper and lower chambers of the sliding pillars and how they are replenished. I'll soon be taking a 100 mile trip, 50 miles each way; and I'll clean things off beforehand and see what the leakage looks like when I get home. But I suspect that overnight after I return, there will be a puddle about 2 or 3 inches in diameter under the right pillar, a somewhat smaller one under on the left. But I guess my question is academic because from what I read, even if such leakage were considered excessive, the re-sealing process for the pillars is not something I want to or even perhaps am able to undertake.

Many years ago I was assured by an Italian friend (somewhat forcefully I might add! I had leaked oil on his garage floor!) that Aurelia front suspension sliding pillars should exhibit negligible leakage when the vehicles are parked.
I have heard of new inner seals being made from PTFE to replace a felt seal with varying success.
The only Aurelia I have owned which leaked oil when parked actually had very worn front suspension to the extent that I replaced the front axle in entirety.

My Aurelia, with a rebuilt front suspension leaves a nice puddle of oil every time I lift the car on my scissor lift.
As I lift it, it makes some slurping sound s, and then it starts dripping

For what is worth, after fifty (happy) years of owning a B12:

Don't be over generous lubricating the front suspension.
I leave mine until I hear few 'clonks' from the front end. In fact, if you translate the instruction plate, it refers to ' rumorosa' i.e. noise and to lubricate the suspension when heard.
I only use half a stroke of the plunger for each side and then only before a moderately long drive so that any oil pumped out of the suspension is blown away in the airstream.
If any oil drips onto your tyres when standing, wash it off ASAP otherwise the sidewalls will perish.
Leave the selector lever in the mid-way position which shuts off any gravity driven oil getting into the suspension over time.
I have also put a squirt of Molyslip in the reservoir to aid lubrication of the sliding components in the suspension.
