I spent some time today looking at the three splendid Lancias in the Museo Automovilistico in Malaga.  I imagine that this one, the 1934 Dilambda, is well known to forum members.  What struck me about it was the lack of a radiator badge.  Then I noticed how the trim strip along the middle of the bonnet ended in a shield-shaped plain emblem.  I then noticed that the headlamp surrounds were also shield-shaped.  Subtly done, but very clever I thought.

Hi Norman,

The shield shape on the bonnet is the radiator cap and common to all Dilambdas as are the shield shaped headlights. Apart from the flamboyant 30's bodies, such as the one pictured, Diambdas had a Lancia badge on the radiator grill surround.

Thank you for educating me Robin.  That was the first Dilambda I'd seen "in the metal".

Now that my interest in the Dilambda model has been triggered, I've been reading more on the web and in the forum.  I see from your "Born again Dilambda" article that the Dilambda is the only model that has the shield-shaped headlamps.  Fascinating!   By the way, just noticed and corrected the auto spell checker that substituted Dilemma for Dilambda when I started typing this.  I'm sure that description may be fitting when any major mechanical mishap occurs!

That made me smile and reminded me of Ronald ‘Steady’ Barker’s piece for Car magazine April 1969 “On the Horns of a Dilambda”  his hilarious account of a journey across France in a Dilambda written of course in his inimitable style.

So, the spelling correction may have some truth about it as I can attest to! My Dilambda is called Modestine due in part to he similarity to RL Stevenson’s recalcitrant donkey in his “Travels with a Donkey” Needs prodding with a sharp stick from time to time to remind her who’s boss! Shocked
