I know strange noises are difficult to diagnose from afar but I have a squeak coming from the left hand front of my coupe that is only apparent over bumps. It cannot be reproduced by bouncing the suspension by hand and all rubber bushes look ok, my best guess is that the leaf spring is dry so I have tried spraying WD40 on it without sucess. Anyone had a similar squeaky experience?

Probably rear subframe bolt needs tightening up. I think it's a simple 17m socket.

Thanks, I will check the subframe bolts and swap the shock over to the other side.

If it is not the sybframe bolts, it is likely to be the very dry transverse spring. Very difficult to eliminate it. Andrea

I think it was Colin Marr who a number of years ago had a similar sounding situation with his Fulvia Sport. It turned out to be the captive nut in the subframe tower had broken loose and was allowing the subframe leg to move a small amount.  What I can't remember from his narration to me was whether it was the nut chaffing on the plate or the subframe leg chaffing on the edge of the inner wheel arch that was causing the squeek (?)  Anyway, sorting the pretty simple solution of re-attaching the nut was far from easy and involved cutting away metal to gain access.  Hopefully this is not your problem, but it is an idea?

Roddy’s memory is correct and I had intended to post about my squeak, which may or may not be the same. The captive nut is held in place on top of the box that forms part of the sub-frame mount. The welds had failed around the top of the box, which allowed some movement between broken pieces of metal. I was lucky in finding the services of a genius with welding skills by the name of Graham Bates who did key-hole surgery inside the wheel-arch to rebuild the box in-situ – and you would never know, although now you do! Part of Graham’s genius was to take the sub-frame out with the engine and everything else in place and undisturbed.

All the subframe bolts are tight, have not got round to checking shock absorber yet.

My transverse spring squeaked because of a build up of road crud over the years. Omicron stripped it to single leaves (leafs?) cleaned everything and then rebuilt with fresh rubber protectors.
