Battery Advise

Evening everyone...

Am the proud owner of a Lancia Fulvia Series 2 1.3 and at the moment am trying to get the old girl started, the main problem is a very dodgy battery. Could anyone let me know what would be the best new battery to buy.

I use a 'Banner' battery in all my Fulvias - made in Austria, I think, and purchased at a local motor factors.  The model number is 54413.  The price is about £60, which is a little more expensive than some, however they hold a charge and last for years. Importantly, have the terminals in the correct position for a Fulvia - i.e.: the posts are nearer the centre line (rather than the wing) and the earth is forward and the live to the rear.  (The factory glued a little piece of rubber sheet onto the face of the air pick-up box so as to prevent the live terminal shorting against the metal box in the event of a frontal impact.)

I just got mine from Halfords: it's an HB063 model.
It's been in my 1.3 Coupé for years with no problem.

It is also a good idea to disconnect the (-) lead from the gearbox, give it careful clean to bring the terminal to bright metal and refit it with a clean washer. Not infrequently one sees amazing results in prompt starting, Andrea

Thank you all for your quick reply's and very useful information, and you were right nistri about the (-) lead, just given it a good clean and now have all my lights working ....Brilliant !! . Still might upgrade the wiring on my headlights as if looks like spaghetti junction and any slight pull on the wires turns them off, oh and the indicators are still refusing to play ball.
