I got some great advice on buying a new exhaust for my Series 2 Coupe.  I went ahead and bought an Imasaf system which arrived a couple of days ago and looks very well made.   Can anyone advise whether there is any value in painting/treating the exterior before fitting?

Generally steel exhausts rot from the inside due to not getting them warm enough and the condensate does the rest.....

Some coat manifold areas with ceramic coating to mostly reduce under bonnet heat. This in my view is not worth it for a whole exhaust system.

Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

I think I am right in saying that the Imasaf exhaust systems are painted with a special aluminium rich paint from the factory. I totally agree that rotting from inside is the issue.
The killer for mild steel exhausts is short runs and starting the car and not driving it anywhere as the condensation is not blown out or evaporated.

I had my mild steel system ceramic coated inside and out, in theory it should be impervious to corrosion.
