Hi All,

Hopefully someone can help with this...
Will a 1.3 818302 engine fit a 1966 Fulvia Coupe 1.2?
I'm hoping its just a case of swapping over the alloy plate at the rear of the engine to accommodate the different gearbox?

Hello Phillip

It can be done but is not quite as simple as that.  You will have to use an alternator instead of the dynamo, and an electric cooling fan.  (The S1 block has a casting to take a long bolt to mount the dynamo, whereas the S2 block has a little lug cast on to take the rear mounting of an alternator - the front mounting goes onto a plate on the water pump).  You will need an S2 starter, instead of the S1.  The main difficulty is that the S1 spigot shaft of the gearbox is 9mm in diameter where it locates in the bearing in the end of the crankshaft, but the S2 shaft is 10mm and the bearing in the S2 crank is therefore 10mm i.d. (o.d. and bearing thickness are also different as the housing in the crankshafts are different).  You will therefore need to make up a .5mm thick sleeve to fit over the S1 gearbox shaft end to give a satisfactory location in the bearing. 

Perhaps someone else can confirm, but I suspect you have to mate the S1 clutch friction plate to the S2 flywheel and diaphragm clutch cover. Obviously the S2 bell-housing has to be transferred onto the S1 gearbox because you are using an S2 engine back-plate, but I cannot confirm if the S2 clutch thrust bearing is the one to use?

It was a very long time ago but I  am fairly sure that the engine changeover I effected in our S1 1200cc early aluminium Sport from original to an 818302 engine was very very straightforward as the donor engine came from a S1 1,3S Coupe and was therefore a dynamo engine.I don't recall any issues with the gearbox shaft or clutch.

I hope I have not confused the issue?  Chris is correct in saying that his swap from S1 1200 to S1 1300S was fairly straightforward.  But to swap from S1 1200 to S2 1300 is not, in my humble opinion. Peter Gerrish will certainly be able to confirm, as may others, but I am fairly certain that the 1200 engine has a different back plate, rear oil seal and flywheel/fixing from the 1300 engine, irrespective of whether S1 or S2 1300.  My earlier post was in anticipation that you would want to use the later S2 flywheel and diaphragm clutch, instead of trying to get a S1 1300 flywheel and coil spring clutch cover, etc.

Perhaps the first post after the original enquiry should have asked was the proposed "1.3 818302 engine" from a Series 1 coupé or a Series 2 Saloon as they both use an engine with the prefix 818.302.  If Philip can answer this, we can take the advice further.
