When my car arrived one of the many non-working components was the horn. Now that the car is in pieces I have found the contact ring which sits on top of the steering box. This looks like a Bakelite(?) disc with a copper strip around its upper surface which makes contact with a fixed contact of to the side. This disc on my car does not touch the other contact and seems to move up and down its spline very easily. Should it be held in place by a spacer or some other fitting?

I am sure of very little. However I think my issue is that the disc is loose on the spline. I can move it like so.

Following Andrea's comment, the parts book describes this as a flasher contact??
I have a spare disk so will compare with my 1.3HF

Tim, the flashing function did not work either. If the ring is the flasher I presume the horn is the contact that can be seen just in from the outer edge of the disc? None of this was connected and a supplementary button on the dash had been rigged to operate the horn, .

On the steering wheel the center button is the light flasher and the ring around should sound the horn. The ring on the steering coupler is certainly loose but the horn is not involved in this problem, check that the two horns work if directly connected to a battery,Andrea

Andrea. The horns do work but are not connected to the outer push ring. I want both the headlamp flasher and the horn to work from the steering wheel. So, should I use a blob of Araldite(?) to hold the disc in position? Then I would have to re-instate the wiring, of which there is no sign.

Yes, you can try araldite but make sure the area is clean. Please remember that on a Fulvia you activate all accessory items (lights included) by making their contact to earth and not by switching on their positive supply. Thus, it is essential that the earth contacs are perfect everywhere. In your case someone must have cut the wiring to the horns. Andrea

Simon, looking at your first picture showing the disc away from the contact,a flat portion of the splined column where the clamp bolt should locate is visible. It seems to me that the clamp should be higher up the splines which would then hold the disc firmly in position and then you could adjust the contact? What do you think?

I can't remember how the disk is held in place, but interesting article in my "Gazoline" magazine today about fitting the disks - there is an Allen screw holding it in place on this model - is it the same for yours ??
(in the same magazine is an on-going rebuild of an S1 Fulvia, today is stripping the gearbox)

Here is the arrangement on my 1.3HF. Also confirm the disc is secured by a grub allen screw.

Thanks all, I can manage a grub screw, if I can see it. In Tims first picture what does the black wire at 6 o'clock do? Is it 'bridging' the pad? Still unsure (totally) how the horn fits into all this.
