Steering box - replace SAE 90 oil with steering lube (Penrite)

I'm looking to put my 1600 HF back on the road this year. The steering box will need to be put back but before I do I'm thinking of changing from using SAE/GX 90 oil (as per the S2 Instruction Book) to (Penrite) steering box lube to eliminate the leaking oil when using SAE/GX 90 . Has anyonelse done this and if so what affect does it have on steering feel, etc.

Change both seals and continue to use oil. I go up to sae140ep

I use the Penrite oil and it works perfectly. It prevents leaks and has no detrimental effects. The only problem with it is getting it in through the tiny hole provided in the Lambda steering box. It needs to be warmed up to make it fluid enough! Once in, it stays there.

I can't comment on Lancia steering boxes but beware, some steering boxes are designed for use with oil which can flow through holes, grooves and channels. my Salmsoin being one such. If it is greased, parts such as the bush and shaft for the worm wheel which carries the drop arm don't get lubricated and wear out. Better a slight leak than a worn out part.

Agreed. It's the same with the pot joints on Aurelias. They were designed to use oil with internal drillings to ensure the oil gets everywhere, particularly to the rubbing surfaces however some so called experts use a CV joint grease which won't leak if the rubber boot cracks but which won't pass through the small holes.Get
Regarding steering boxes, replacement of oil seals is usually straightforward and effective as long as the bearings are ok.

I'll use the Penrite lube, possibly using a gear lube pump and some heat to get it into the steering box.

I have the highest regard for Lancia's design and engineering, certainly up to the early 70's so if they say oil, then I use oil although not necessarily of exactly the same viscosity as originally specified.
