What colour are the bell shaped covers on the side control housings on a Series 2 Zagato supposed to be. I have various sets in either matt black or a satin aluminium style finish. I suspect either is correct I wonder though what the majority are? The various brochures and literature I have point to the aluminium style in the main.

Series 1 are chrome, held in with a big chrome lockring. Both my Series 2 cars are black, and seem to be in 'factory finish', as are the knurled nuts holding them in place. The stalks are satin silver. Perhaps the saloon is different as I have a vague recollection of the dash panel area having some satin silver finish in places (?)

Hi Roddy, Series 1 Berlina have one on the right for the indicator and dip switch. With Coupe the only difference was that while the coupe's lever arm was straight, the Berlina's lever arm had a slight kink, but the switch itself is exactly the same; both Coupe and Berlina had the main light switch and Ignition switch on the dash, while Berlina had the column change gear lever opposite the switch, until the floor change gear lever was introduced with the GT. I'm with Roddy, Series 1 including the saloons were chrome, although a number I have seen are satin silver most likely painted when the chrome peeled off.
Picture is of our 2c in Jersey 1996 trying to recreate our honeymoon of 30 years earlier. Don't read too much into Margaret's body language, we're still together!
Now where have I seen that look recently? Several times in fact!
Robin.

Seems they could be either then, my satin aluminium/silver finish have satin black locking rings. I also have stalks i both colours, I am thinking of going for the silver finish on the bells and satin black on the stalks and lock rings.

No, I didn't and in fairness to her I have remembered that she had only returned from a traumatic stay in hospital a few days earlier. Robin.

The ones on my Series 3 coupe were satin black (one of the cars with "green" carpets). But it didn't look like they were painted but more like some sort of chemical effect where the underlying metal colour showed through.
The one thing I remeber very clearly was to disconnect the battery before taking the switches out because there are live parts which will short out on the threaded opening. So be careful.

Probably black zinc passivate, that was popular around that time as a finish. Brian 8227

Having vapour blasted a pair of the silver finish items it appears that the finish could be some form of plating as below the silvery finish is a layer of copper on top of the mild steel base metal. I think that the Series 1 finish of chrome plating was deleted due to expense on the S2 cars and replaced with the aluminium style finish. I have not stripped a set of black bells that I have yet. Also noticed that one side had a steel locknut and the other side a plastic one. On a totally seperate subject I have a set of woolly bear Zagato seats that seem to have started out black and faded brown or is it the other way round?
