Apperently the seller is out of ireland at the momet, a friend of mine has made an appointment to see the car next wednesday but he has reservations about the deal. When he phoned the seller he sounded like somone from a certan African country, not Ialian sounding at all. We'll wait and see. I might tag along tohave a look, I still wonder why someone would try to sell a car like that on the Irish market it would be worth more in Italy. and about the road tax, any car that has been registered before august 2008 in any part of the world is taxed at the old rate which I think is about €840.00 for a 2.4.  Roll Eyes

What's the tax situation on classic cars over there?

I'm remembering a friends Flavia 2000HF and struggling to think why it wouldn't now make an excellent everyday car.   If the tax was in its favour you could forgive it a lot of initial restoration work and a heap of preventative maintenance.  Maybe a bit heavy on fuel, but light on tyres and they're not cheap on a modern car these days.

According to the Irish legislation, a car is deemed a "Classic" when according to its Date of First Registration, the car is older than 30 years. The year of manufacture is largely irrelevant, because it is the actual date of first registration that counts. When a car has the Classic Car status, it benefits from the following exclusions:

• No VRT duty on imports
• Only 44 euro Annual Road Tax

These are the current car road tax rates

The rates shown apply to tax discs taken out from 1 April 2010.
Cars registered before 1 March 2001 (based on engine size)
Private/light goods (TC11)

Engine size (cc)
 12 months rate
 6 months rate

Not over 1549
 £ 125.00
 £ 68.75

Over 1549

Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)
The rates shown only apply to cars that have been type approved in category M1 and registered on the basis of CO2 emissions measured in grams per kilometre (g/km) driven. These details are shown on the registration certificate (V5C).

Vehicle tax rates for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 are split into 13 bands depending on CO2 emissions. The amount you'll pay depends on which band your car is in. The lower a car’s emissions, the lower the vehicle tax payable on it.
