When is a 1.3S a 1.3HF?
« on: 12 November, 2011, 03:46:54 PM »
Never I imagine. However over 18 years my LHD 1.3S has aquired alloy bonnet, boot and doors, plexiglass side and rear windows, HF alloys and light Sparco seats with harnesses. It's also lost its bumpers. The only weight it has gained is a rear roll cage. So firstly, what do you estimate it now weighs? The originals with alloy panels etc weighed in at 830Kgs I think. Would you think mine is now around that figure? Secondly sometimes I feel it could justifiably wear HF stickers with pride, other times I feel it would always be a fake and that it is in fact a lightweight 1.3S. What's the general opinion? Thirdly, being a Series 2 it produces 90bhp. The early 1.3HF's produced 87, while the later ones produced 101. What was done to the engine to increase it by only 11bhp?

Cams and compression ratio increased the power.

Wouldn't bother me if you dressed it up as a 1.3HF, as long as it wasn't sold as such.

Re car weight, have a look at your mot brake performance sheet ( assuming your mot garage give you one). My garage ( a small village garage with one mot bay) has a brake tester that weighs each axle and this is printed (in small print) on the sheet.

Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

Interesting about the MOT sheet. Trouble is I now live in France and the weight saving work was all carried out before it followed me out so it would only have its old weight. Had a look on the French sheet but can't see much there apart from brake figures. Not to worry. I have to say it accelerates fantastically well at any speed. No, I would never pass it off as a genuine HF - in fact I have no intention of ever selling it. When I bought it, it was sporting a 1.6HF bonnet badge which I replaced with a 1.3S version. That is just claiming something that is impossible whereas at least it is now in the spirit of a 1.3HF.

Picture of the real thing - but I'm with Neil, nothing wrong with a rep as long as it's not passed off as original.
