I have another (hopefully simple) question for forum members.  The rear parcel shelf of my white 1973 S2 Coupe has at some stage been recovered and is in poor condition where holes have been made for full harness seatbelt.  I plan to recover it.

Can anybody tell me what colour and material the parcel shelf would have been when new?  The seats are black.  I would guess that the three possibilities are: 1) off-white headliner material, matching the original off-white headliner, 2) off-white vinyl, or 3) black vinyl to match the black seats.

I have located suppliers for headliner and seat cover material so it's just the colour and material type that I need to know. As always, I would appreciate your help.

Off white vinyl. Very fine grain, so different to the stuff used on the seats and door cards.

Thanks for that information.  Just what I was looking for.

Norm - just shout if you need a close up picture of this off-white vinyl.

Scott - that would be very useful as it would be good to see the grain.  I'll send you an e-mail.
Once I've decided on grain, I think my biggest difficulty will be finding off-white.  The two companies I've talked to so far offer either white (which is too bright), or cream (which is way too yellow!

Thanks John - that colour looks just right.  I know it's hard to tell a colour when it's been reproduced on the web, but vanilla sounds like the right halfway house between white and cream that I'm looking for!  I'll see if I can get a sample from Woolies.

Grain is completely wrong.
Original has a very fine grain that somehow looks right for a parcel tray. Its not trying to look like leather.

Its always seems really hard to get trim materials like Vinyl that match.

Woolies have a very limited range of vinyls. There are other general upholstery suppliers that have more choice.

In case it's still useful, this is a photo of the parcel shelf with the seat for contrast showing the fine grain type vinyl used:

Great - thanks Scott.  I'll look for a very fine grain like that.

Just out of interest my '75 car has the parcel shelf and the door panels covered in an exotic-looking bottle green moquette. I'm 99% sure it's original and presumably was available as an option.
