So had another go at sealing the joint. Getting good at removing the filler pipe. I use the electric facet pump I fitted to to empty the tank first.
Anyway I noticed that if the filler pipe was aligned at the top end it wasn't seating properly at the tank.
It was fairly easy to bend the tank outlet slightly to line everything up.
I then used rubber sealing tape, wrapping it tightly around the filler pipe before assembling the joint.
So far so good, although I am yet to brim the tank.

What is rubber sealing tape? If it is self amalgamating then I think this is softned by petrol...

I left some in some petrol all night and it came out completely intact.
Not sure where I got it, it was in the garage in one of my many random storage tins.
I will keep an eye on the joint though.

Turns out I have a tiny hole in the tank. Porous weld around the spigot.
Omicron are sending me a replacement.

For the purposes of closure;
Replacement tank arrived from Omicron as promised and the courier took the leaky one away.
Now fitted and no leaks.
Great service from Omicron. Glad I didn't get the tank direct from Italy.
