I saw this on e-bay

At $6,000 I shan't be buying it but what a wonderful toy. At first glance it looks a bit like a 1:43 white metan kit but when you read the description it is actually almost 16 inches long.

Fascinating, I was expecting a battery powered electric motor, not a petrol one. How did these work then? On the end of a cable, or did they just run round in circles?

It was the motoring equivalent of control line aircraft so there was a central anchoring point with cables out to the car. They ran in a circle and I presume the goal was to do the fastest circuits. I think they were popular up to the 1950s when slot car racing really took over.

I've read about them. I think the "off" switch is a rod sticking up like a car aerial to swipe with a hand or bridge.
