The rubber seal on the inside of my original petrol cap has become guey and shiny and peels away easily. Is this the end of the life of the cap? Or can it be fitted with a new seal? If a new cap is now needed are they easily obtainable?

My Flavia coupe failed the MOT on the petrol cap rubber seal....somewhere in the Viva Lancia was an article showing how to dismantle the cap and replace the seal

v difficult to replace the rubber. I too remember seeing an article in VL but not sure if it was for the early Flavia type. New ones (old stock) were available at the Padova show last year if you looked hard but at a price. I bought one as my Vignale cap was going goey too. |

I believe it is possible to rebuild the petrol cap if you have access to a lathe to make a new cental retaining stud.

Thank you to all for your help.
The people in Norfolk I have learned can refurbish the cap with 3mm thick nitrile rubber for about £30. The secret is as many of you have pointed out is the re-riveting of the brass stud and spring assembly. This they say they can do.
My car has been standing for 13 years or so with little use so constant exposure only to petrol fumes has not helped. I suppose a little oil on the rubber would keep the newer petrol and its additives away from the (wait for it) perishing rubber!

He has decided to go to Omicron.
I am quite surprised Lancia didn't use Fulvia and Flavia commonality/

Chaps,
I sent my cap to Omicron last week as the seal had also gone all gooey, and as Colin had suggested that it would cost about £30.00 thought nothing of it.
Be warned, It arrived back today all repaired with a new seal and a bill for £137.72 !

Wow!!
I was told that the nitrile rubber was about £5-6 and that a new centre “rivet”would be made and peened over. How the cost can escalate like this I do not know.
