Although I have a PhD in experimental Nuclear Physics, I am the black sheep of the family. My father and two sons are "proper" engineers. Fortunately, I have inherited my family’s practical abilities and a love for all things mechanical. This combination of interests has allowed me to run the most comprehensive tests ever performed on a classic engine and modern petrol. Testing possible solutions on my 1949 MG TC has allowed me to make practical recommendations that will benefit all owners.

Born in the early 1950s, I bought my first car, the MG TC for £60 in 1967. It was in very poor condition. In the early 1970s student cars were a rarity. Even though my TC rattled and burned oil, as a student at Manchester University, owning a two seater MG sports car was a real status symbol. After a full rebuild in 2004, I now regularly use my TC for longer trips in the UK and Europe with other MG owners.

After the removal of lead from petrol in the late 1980s, like many classic vehicles my MG did not run properly. The research at Manchester University has identified a number of ways that modern petrol can cause severe engine damage. The addition of ethanol to petrol is only one of them.

Classic Engines, Modern Petrol will be of interest to anybody who owns a classic or old-timer vehicle. It contains a wealth of information about engines, carburettors and, of course, modern ethanol blended petrol.
