Hi there,

Been doing a lot of research into the early competition history of the 1.2 and 1.3 HF that raced in ETCC Group 2, Targa Florio, Nurburgring etc from 1966 to 1969. Looking through a lot of old photos, the fuel filler flap has been moved up from the right rear quatre panel to on top of the shoulder. However on the FIA Homologation forms it shows the car with the traditional fuel flap position.

Does anyone have an answer to why they did this? Was it purely to speed up fuel stops by increasing the flow into the tank and I’m guessing that it was a simple cut and shut in the workshops!

My works 1.3HF has this flap. Definitely works spec before they went higher onto the top of the wing with the Monza style. In the boot is a 60 or 80 litre tank. The normal tank is deleted. The standard flap position would be too low for the internal tank.

Great, thanks for info! Makes a lot of sense. I guess these were separate fabricated aluminium tanks with the original tank hole blanked over in the boot floor.

I believe they used the top pressing of the original tank to blank the hole in the boot.

The internal tank reduces the polar moment of the car as it was nearer the centre....

The Altorio book shows the flap in the higher position on page 166.  The text is in Italian. Pages 206 and 207 tell the story of the adoption of the Monza type filler.  Picture courtesy of Giorgio Nada Editore s.r.l.
