I have at last got Boot running smoothly with her 2.8 litre engine and alloy head.  She now pulls full revs in top gear uphill and I have to ease off to prevent overrevving.  I suspect she has a lower back axle ratio than the torpedo and really needs another gear.  Does anyone have any experience of or knowledge of overdrives?  I had one on my TR4 and it was a neat little box that fitted on the back of the gearbox and something of the sort could easily be fitted underneath I suspect.

Yes, it's been done and Mike Piggin was probably the first to do it, more than 10 years ago. Recently, Les Keeling has fitted one to his car and found it to be an excellent modification. I drove a fifth series car in Australia which had an overdrive and I was very impressed, and I intend to fit one to my Lambda. There are quite a few in Oz with them fitted and the general concensus is that the Laycock "J" type is the one to go for. These were fitted to Triumphs, Volvos and even Ford Transits! I found one on eBay for about £100 and spent a further £300 or so on suitable a adaptor plate and drive to fit the Lambda. There's a firm specialising in fitting them to vintage cars, but they are quite expensive. Take a look at:- http://www.nostalgiacars.co.uk/overdrive.htm or for spare parts:-http://www.odspares.com/ where you will see thew general arrangement. I still need to get round to fitting mine, but have to mend the Augusta first!

I found an ex-Jaguar (synchro box) overdrive on Ebay for £70 and duly contacted Odspares but they only use the Bentley/Aston Martin type and say the Jag is not suitable.  Who made your plate for £300? - Odspares quote £750 for a comp;ets overhauled unit ready to fit.

It was O/D spares, but I see I paid a total of £387.75 for the "closing assembly," as they described it, by the time I added on carriage, credit card surcharge and VAT. It was in February, 2007, so it might well be more now. Good luck with the project. I still haven't got round to doing mine!

Try Les Keeling who has recently fitted an overdrive and might be prepared to make up another.  He knows all the sources.
