Another question for you all .....

The 1st series Appia that we are working on doesn't have an oil filter fitted, it is blanked off where the mount is normally found - it looks original and properly done - not just a piece of metal bolted on !

Can anyone confirm that this was "normal" and second can you retro-fit an oil filter set up ? I have the bits ......

Thanks

My early car does not have an external filter, nor any facility for fitting one; just an internal gauze filter in the sump.

Thanks Mike, I'll try and take a photo for comparison - do you not have a blanking plate ?

The oil filter mounting is a direct fit when you take the blanking plate off...not sure about the stud length as the oil filter housing is fairly thick...the Consortium has the parts to convert your S1 engine. You might need a different oil feed pipe for the pressure gauge.

As far as I can see I've no blanking plate - whereabouts should I be looking?

Here are some lubrication charts for S1 & S2 Appias - they seem quite different - but to answer your question , the filter is by the petrol pump

Unfortunately the only S1 engine that I have spare already has a filter, so I can't verify the differences easily.

This is when we realise what, and whom, we have lost ---- Don with his enormous depth of knowledge would have known in an instant !!

That's sort of where I was looking - no blanking plate at all:

Hi, when we rebuilt my series 1 we removed the blanking plate

And fitted the later canister type , you may need the pipe but I can,t remember.

No problem with the oil pressure gauge. Dave

I stand corrected...perhaps I could interest you in a later crankcase?

Thanks, Jim, but having spent a fortune rebuilding this engine, I'm not looking for more work!

Here we go - Lancia through the ages .... I wonder at what point they changed the crankcase ? My 1st ser engine from a commercial has the filter

Perhaps all the worn out early S1 cars persuaded them to fix the problem...strange they were still selling them with the blanking plate and the crankcase cast to take the filter but no filter.

Did they add the filter when they changed to thin-wall shell-bearings?
