Good idea. A look through s.1 parts book (1953) shows no mention of a filter.

I believe the filter was routinely fitted after the first 10,000 S1 engines. I have seen S1 engines with factory fitted filters, Andrea

Went back to the Lancia bible, 2nd edition, Wim Oude Weerninck (page 171):
....During a three-lifespan the 1st series was changed in many respects. After a few thousand engines had been produced the gauze oil filter was replaced by a full-flow filter..... Approximately 20,000 of the Appia 1st series were made before the introduction of a 2nd series.
So the 1st series parts book (1953) mentionned by GG must be a very early one. A later one should mention the car number at which the change took place.

All of the engines I have seen have the gauze filter in the sump as well as a cartridge filter in the orange canister.
