Hi All,
I think I know the answer to this but just checking. The previous owner of my S2 1600HF used to use the above. Is this the accepted norm for for a 1972 1600HF?

1600 HF had hardened valve seats. So really no additive to protect the seat is required. Octane booster and perhaps ethanol protection should be considered.

Or Esso Supreme nearly as cheap and reportedly 0 E even though it is obliged to put E5 on it (If I am out of date please say!). |

The Esso E5 that has zero ethanol currently, it has been reported will actually contain 5% from September, still higher octane rating then E10.

Yes, from September there will be ethanol in ESSO fuel. This presumably is connected with the new underground pipeline from Southampton to Heathrow which is just coming onstream.
I will still stay with ESSO 99 Octane though as it seems to give good economy and smooth running ( and I get 6p per litre discount through the Porsche Owners Club!).

I use Millers VSPe if I don't manage to fill up with either Shell of Esso 99 Octane fuel. Me too, but it didn't prevent an episode of very rough running in my Beta on a very hot day at the end of June. Ran fine again after a dose of Super. I'd generally just used normal E5 and rarely bothered with Super until normal fuel was upped to E10. |

Since my Sport 1600 had it's mishap on the M6 on the way back from the GNW in April, I have reverted back to a cap full of Redex and Shell V-power fuel only every half tank and 1,000 miles + later it's never missed a beat.

I still continue to use a lead substitute additive in Fulvias. It may be relevant to remember about the cushioning effect of a lead deposit on valve seats. Do not forget that 1600cc engines, in particular, can be susceptible to 'dropping a valve', with dire consequences.

I have a Fulvia 1300 (S2) and have only ever used Castrol Valvemaster Plus in my long ownership.
I guess specific product doesn't matter as much as said product doing its job of preventing valve seat recession but if anyone knows better please say! I do remember reading a long time ago the main lookout was not mixing additives that use different elements for their protection approach but that may now be redundant advice.
