Hello!
I am in the final stages og assembling the engine.
The heads are back from machining, and I am anxious to get it all back together Cheesy

But, as always, I have a few questions.

1. On which side should the brass vacuum outlet be? picture #1.
My car is a 4th series.

2.Is it possible to fit the heads before you fit the inlet manifolds?

3. picture #3 And what are these things, on the inlet manifolds? are they the petrol drain mentioned in the workshop manual?  Are they needed, and won't they introduce air leaks?

1. The brass vacuum outlet connects via black rubber pipe to the Trico windscreen washer pump which sits on top of the aluminium tank mounted just ahead of the voltage regulator on the LHS of the engine bay to the side of the radiator.
2. It may be possible but not advised due to access to the nuts in the V.
3. The drains should have a unions with  narrow copper pipes which themselves pass to the rear of the engine by the rear engine mounts. Any fuel then drains behind the engine by the flywheel cover.
Hope this helps.

This is very helpful Chris, thank you !

I have fitted one of the heads, so I’ll proceed to fit the intake onto this now.
Then I’ll fit the intake to the second head before fitting the second head to the block.

I think I will plug the fuel drain holes, as one of them has been badly damaged.

Thank you Chris!

Check the condition of the 2 inlet manifolds carefully before fitting Torstein - quite often these days there is corrosion and sometimes frost damage resulting in fine cracks.

In the 2 liter motors, you can fit the inlet manifolds after the heads are mounted - they are smaller, and there is room. In the 2.5 liter engines, the manifolds grew in size, and can't be fitted later. So your current process is correct.

You probably know this... check that the upper faces of the inlet manifolds are level with each other. A small discrepancy can be adjusted by different thicknesses of gasket between them and the carb's lower manifold.

Good advice William, thank you!

really looking forward to starting it up.

I'm going to make a frame for the engine and radiator and start it up on the bench, as per advice given in the "50 years of dirty hands" by Clive Beattie

Good idea. Check for problems, easy to fix minor leaks.

Further progress today.
Both heads fastened.
Test ran the oil pump with a drill and oil was flowing:)
A silly video for those interested here:

Test fitted the headers, and boy they look good.

I have lightened the fly wheel slightly.

But, does it look like s5/6 perhaps?

Which brand of exhaust manifolds are pictured?

These are headers made by Cavalitto in cooperation with Umberto Maglioli back when he was alive.

A new issue:

I think I have the wrong combination of pushrods and lifters.
The pushrods seem to be too long, as I am unable to adjust the valve clearance.

The lifters are the type with hole on the side, and the pushrods are approximately 22,5mm.

I think I should take perhaps 3mm of the pushrods.
But, whats the best technique to do this, and in which end of the rod should the shortening be done?

I recall there are shorter and longer ones. We heated them up, pulled one end off, cut the 3mm. (~⅛”) and reinstalled the ends, maybe soldered. But don’t recall which engine used shorter vs longer.
