4th series headliner glued in place?
«

Hello all, and happy new year!
On a 4th series B20, are there used any glue to secure the headliner?
Front:
Forward of the "hooks" the headliner disappears behind the aluminium frame, and I guess it is held in place by the windshield rubber gasket. But is it also glued in place, or is it only secured by the gasket?
Rear:
On the 4th series, there is no frame surrounding the rear window like there are on earlier models.
Is the headliner simply tucked/pinched in place by the rubber gasket, or is glue used as well?
Thank you for any answers!

Hello Torstein. I just took the headlining out of my 3rd series car (see my recent post re 'inflating headlining'. The front is surely the same as the 4th series, so it's glued to the metalwork behind the screen, covered by the internal trim surround. I can highly recommend Permatex weatherstrip adhesive here where you want high grab, also useful for some of the rubbers. It's expensive but worth every penny, and it's very easy to apply as it doesn't 'string'. You can use a normal trim adhesive on the sides.
At the back, if it doesn't have the painted trim surround like the 3rd series, I'm afraid I don't know, but I expect some glue would be necessary even if it's also trapped by the screen surround.

Thank you Tim!
I am doing the job in a couple of weeks time (got to finish welding the passenger seatboxes before I install the headliner) but it is nice to plan ahead.
Permatex will be the voice then, thanks!

Probably obvious, but you install the headling from rear towards the front, as the hooks at the front provide the tension.
I'd use Permatex on the front and rear but not on the sides. If you need to unglue to adjust, you will find the Permatex difficult to detach without damaging the headlining.
