The tacho on my 1600HF has started to play up.  On starting it appears to read correctly for a second or so but then rapidly goes round to 6000 rpm.  At tickover it fluctuates violently from 2000 to 6000 & as soon as I build the revs up a little it reverts to 6000.  The engine is running perfectly.  I am not sure whether to look for a wiring fault or an instrument problem.  Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

First, I would check carefully the electrical connection of the tacho to the coil. Second, if you are using electronic ignition, the special module between the black box and the tacho to transduce its electrical signals may be damaged (this is a common problem). Otherwise it is likely to be the instrument. Andrea

Hi Andrea.  I am not using elctronic ignition & the tacho connection is firmly attached to one side of the ballast resistor, so it looks as though I will have to source another instrument.

Tim

I am just about to go off sailing for a week but when I get back I will get down to a detailed examination.

I've got a spare set of black face Fulvia instruments. Any use to you?
