Just announced on the BBC Radio 2 news that Silverstone have signed an agreement with Bernie for the British GP for the next 17 years. Grin

So what happened to donington then, will they just leave it half finished.  A case of 10 million or so people saying I told you so.   Can we get anything done in this country on time ?

This weeks Autosport (3 December 09) had a report in which Simon Gillett says that he believes the track will survive.  He estimates that restoring the track will cost less than £1million and take less than two months.  He also says that as its closest neighbour is East Midlands Airport, the land cannot be used for residential or factory purposes, so it could only be used for either parkland or as a race track.

Edd Straw, the F1 editor also points out that the asphalt remains intact apart from 100 metres from the exit of McLeans to Goddards via the Melbourne Loop.  The run-off at Coppice has also been dug up so both these areas would need re-laying.  The tyre barriers and Armco barriers would also need to be replaced.

In all, it would appear that it only needs a "small" amount of work to restore, but the problem now must surely be finding an investor who will put up the money into returning the track to normal!

There is a possibility Jonathan Palmer may be waiting in the wings.

Hopefully he will take it on as he is credited with transforming Brands, Oulton and Cadwell Park.

It will be such a shame if it closes for good as we've seen many a good meeting there over the years. A highlight being a DTM meeting
from the mid-nineties with the truly spectacular Alfa 155's. Oh, and not forgetting the AGM we had there a few years back when a S4 , Stratos and 2 x 037's brought over from Italy were demonstrated on the Melbourne Loop. The Italians were fitting baked bean cans (from the circuit cafe)and wire wool to the exhausts to try and get them under the noise limit! Fabulous.
 Margaret even had a ride round in the S4 with Giorgio Pianta at the wheel, well I suppose she is better looking than me!
